The Way Up is Down {Jeremiah 5-7}

We sing a song nearly every week at our church and the chorus has been stuck in my head.  “We humble ourselves…”

Last week I wrote about walking in obedience to God versus creating my own version of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’

The verse which caught my attention today is, “So now the Lord says, “Stop right where you are!  Look for the old, godly way, and walk in it.  Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls.”  6:16

What happens to you when you are the director of your ways?  Do you get so caught up in doing things your way that when someone comes into your home and rubs you the wrong way and ruffles your feathers, do you become defensive?  Or do you immediately seek God for direction?

Charles Spurgeon once said,
“Every Christian has a choice between being humble or being humbled.”

“God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”  James 4:6

God makes a promise to those who do humble themselves.  “Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.  Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time, He may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.  1 Peter 5:5-7

If we humble ourselves, God will exalt us in due time.  However, the opposite is also true.  If we assume God’s role and exalt ourselves, then He will assume our role, and humble us.
