Adoration- It is all about Jesus! (Luke 7:36-50)

9:30 PM

 Please read: Luke 7:36-50

As we read today’s scripture, we find a contrast between a Pharisee and an immoral woman. Apparently to the people there, Simon the Pharisee was a “good man of God” – because of his good works- and the woman, an unworthy sinner. But Jesus can see far more than appearances: He sees the heart and its intentions.

We are not sure who this woman was, but one thing for sure is that she had heard of Jesus and probably even heard him preaching: sharing of God's love and forgiveness and healing and restoration.

She as a prostitute was considered a woman of no value. She probably suffered insults and contempt for a long time. But now it is different: she now has the urge -that only faith can give- to show Jesus her repentance, in humbly submission and adoration:
“ and standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began wetting His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and [respectfully] kissed His feet [as an act signifying both affection and submission] and [c]anointed them with the perfume.” (7:38)

“None can truly perceive how precious Christ is, and the glory of the gospel, except the broken-hearted. But while they feel they cannot enough express self-abhorrence on account of sin, and admiration of his mercy, the self-sufficient will be disgusted, because the gospel encourages such repenting sinners.”  (M. Henry)

This passage shows us what God has been telling His people for ages about what true worship is: Even Jesus quoted this from Hosea 6:6:
“Go and learn what this [Scripture] means: ‘I desire compassion [for those in distress], and not [animal] sacrifice,’ for I did not come to call [to repentance] the [self-proclaimed] righteous [who see no need to change], but sinners [those who recognize their sin and actively seek forgiveness].” (Matthew 9:13)

In Psalm 50:8, 14, 23 we read:
“I do not reprove you for your sacrifices; Your burnt offerings are continually before Me”… “Offer to God the sacrifice of thanksgiving And  pay your vows to the Most High;” ...“He who offers a sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving honors Me; And to him who orders his way rightly [who follows the way that I show him], I shall show the salvation of God.”

What is pleasing to God is a life of wholly surrender, because He has given us the greatest proof of His love for us: “His only begotten son, so that whoever believes and trusts in Him [as Savior] shall not perish, but have eternal life” .   (John 3:16)

Those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior, have His Holy Spirit living in them. Yes, His Presence in us, through His Salvation! Our lives are to exalt Jesus through our obedience; abiding in Him, and reflecting His love and compassion to this fallen world.

“We must be willing to humble ourselves before God, surrender every part of our lives to His control, and adore Him for who He is, not just what He has done. Hebrews 12:28–29 reminds us of Deuteronomy 4:24: “Let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ‘God is a consuming fire.’” That consuming fire strips us of pride and self-consciousness. To truly worship means we lose ourselves in the adoration of another. Our only thought is the majesty and glory of the One we adore”.

Adoration

A Psalm Of Adoration (Psalm 138)

12:30 PM

The Psalms are songs of praise and adoration.  David had a close relationship with God and I believe a big part of that was because David knew how to magnify God. When we look through a magnifying glass we see things closer, bigger, and in more detail. David saw the grand scale of who God was in all of His majesty and at the same time the grand scale of God’s boundless love toward man. If we want to know God we must learn to see Him with wonder, awe and adoration.
As A. W Tozer said,
"We must never rest until everything inside us worships God."

Expressing Adoration for God is:
-A Whole Heart Experience-
“I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise;”

-An Expression of Gratitude-
“I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness,”

-A Recognition of God’s Supremacy-
"for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.”

-A Dependence and Trust-
“On the day I called, you answered me; my strength of soul you increased.”

-A Humble Submission-
“For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly, but the haughty he knows from afar.”

-A Pursuit of Victory-
“Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me. “

-A Perspective of Purpose-
“The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.”

When you view God, just what do you see? How intimately do you know Him? To know Him is to love Him and to be aware of just how much He loves you! The more you magnify and praise Him, the more your awe and adoration will increase. You will come to seek and appreciate Him from the depths of your heart....a heart that beats because of Him and for Him.

Adoration {Joshua 22}

According to my internet search, Adoration is a sign of devotion to and worship of Jesus Christ.  It’s a deep love and respect; worship, veneration.  It’s the highest type of worship.

The book of Joshua is about the history of Israel’s conquest of the promised land.  I really like this book because it wraps up what so many of us face in life.  It’s a story that reminds me of the game follow the leader.  In that game you mimic the antics of the person in front of you in the line.  Being a follower was alright, but being the leader was the most fun.  However, in real life, great leaders are rare, often men or women are elected or appointed to leadership positions but then falter or fail to act.  Others abuse their power to satisfy their egos, crushing their followers and squandering resources.  But without faithful, ethical and effective leaders, people wander.

What I love about this book is Joshua’s obedience.  His key to success was his submission to God, when God spoke, Joshua listened and obeyed.  Joshua’s obedience served as a model, as a result, Israel remained faithful to God throughout Joshua’s lifetime.

This life is a journey and we are, as Christians, wanting to reach our eternal destination.  I personally have held onto the promises in Jeremiah 29:11 and John 14:3.

What does it take to reach our promised land?  Joshua reminds us in chapter 22, verse 5.

“But be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you; to love the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, to keep his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.”

There will be times we have to surrender.  Times of hardship.  However we need to be disciplined and that takes sacrifice and commitment.  We must remember to seek God and confess and repent of our sins.  And as we celebrate our faith, we remember to adore the Lord for that is the greatest command.

On a side note, I had an amazing encounter with the Lord while reading the book of Joshua to prepare for this post.  Our journey through these topics has taken me to places I hadn’t been.  In order to prepare for these posts, I begin reading my chosen scripture much earlier than the week we are posting it.  And sometimes another writer will post something that strikes very deep and leads me to my knees.  Personally, our topical study has been an experience I truly never expected and I was questioning if I was doing things “right”.  Then last Sunday, Sue posted this, “And your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way; walk in it, when you turn to the right hand and when you turn to the left. - Isaiah 30:21  For me, it was the answer I needed.  Yes, you are walking in the “right” direction.  Keep on doing what you are doing.

You Are My Son {Hebrews 1:1-13}

4:14 PM

Monday Nov. 11, Hebrews 1:1-13

Of the many beautiful ways Jesus is described in the Bible, this is one of my favorites, “He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.” (vs. 3) Higher than the angels, Jesus radiates God’s glory like the rays of the sun radiate its light. As the Lord Himself, He is the perfect image of the Father, who after paying our sin debt on the Cross with His precious blood, now sits at His place of honor at the right hand of God. I love how when asked about Jesus, Dr. Charles Stanley says, “Jesus is God in the flesh. He is to be worshipped as Lord, praised as Creator, recognized as Ruler, and glorified as our only Savior.” Yet sadly, some say Jesus was a great teacher or a mighty prophet, but still just a man. But God says of Jesus, “You are My Son.” (vs. 5) Additionally not just His Son, but His “beloved Son”. (Matt. 3:17) And as Lord and Savior of my life, Jesus too is my beloved and the One whom I adore.

When I looked up the definition of adoration I found it to mean a respect, reverence, or devotion to a certain person, place, or thing.  It comes from the Latin word, adōrātiō, meaning to worship someone or something. That’s exactly how I feel about Jesus. I am devoted to worshipping Him, and the love I feel for the Lord makes my heart want to burst at the seams! Why do I love Jesus you ask? Oh let me count the ways!

I love Jesus because He gave His life for mine. (Gal. 1:4) I owed a debt I could never pay. And because of my sin I was separated eternally from God, on the path to death and destruction. But Jesus came, and through His sacrificial death on the Cross, stamped my bill “paid in full.” My Savior reconciled me back to God, and washed away the filth of my sins with His precious blood.

I love Jesus because He first loved me. (1 John 4:19) If it wasn’t for the Lord I would never have experienced what it feels like to be loved unconditionally. Knowing every mistake I would make and how I would fail Him daily, even before I was born, Jesus still choose to make me His very own. (Eph. 1:4) His love is true and constant, and I can trust that He loves me just as much when I am at my worst as He does when I’m at my best.

I love Jesus because He is my friend. (John 15:15) No truer, more loyal, friend could I ever find than in Christ. He is my greatest Champion, who not only wants the very best for me, but also helps me to achieve it. He is always there when I need Him, sharing my joy in the good times and my tears in the bad. He is my comfort and my strength. He knows me better than I know myself, and is faithful like no other.

Many are my reasons for loving Jesus, and these are but a few. And this amazing love I share with Him, He wants to share with you. Christ suffered scorn, hatred, brutality, torture, and Crucifixion, “for the joy set before Him.” (Heb. 12:2) And what is that joy? It’s you, me, and everyone who receives Him as Lord and Savior. So if you haven’t already, I implore you to open your heart to Jesus. Let His love and forgiveness wash through you and fill your heart with love, worship, and adoration!

Scripture Saturday ~ Hebrews 1:3 ~ Adoration ~ Adoring Jesus

12:00 AM

Saturday, November 9, 2019

Welcome to Scripture Saturday!

This coming week's memory verse is Hebrews 1:3...

The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. (NIV)

I know, you’re asking, why did she choose this verse to memorize for our upcoming theme of Adoration? Because, when we following Jesus, we are adoring God. When we praying to Jesus, we are adoring God. When we are listening to Jesus, we are adoring God. When we are obeying Jesus, we are adoring God.

Jesus is God’s Son. He is God’s Glory.

I found this analogy while researching…

“Jesus relates to God the way the rays of sunlight relate to the sun. There is no time that the sun exists without the beams of radiance. They cannot be separated…The rays of the sun however are an extension of the sun. We see the sun by means of seeing the rays of the sun. So too we see God the Father by seeing Jesus for they are one God.”

Want to know what God says? Listen to Jesus. Want to know what God does? Watch Jesus. He is God incarnate in man. And He is, and should always be, who we adore!

Accept No Imitations {Hebrews 9}

12:00 AM

Have you ever been to the Grand Canyon? I haven’t. I’ve only seen pictures like this one, but others who have been, tell me that photographs can’t begin to do it justice; it’s something you have to see and experience yourself to truly appreciate it. That’s sort of what’s going on here in chapter 9 of Hebrews.

The articles the author of Hebrews describes in these verses were considered the holiest objects of the Jewish faith. If these articles were discovered today they would be considered priceless archaeological treasures by today’s standards. But here, in this chapter, the author calls them all just an illustration (v. 9), carrying out mere external obligations (v. 10).

What’s more, not everyone was free to enter the Holy of Holies where God dwelt. When Jesus died, He tore the curtain that separated the entire world from the Most Holy Place and He completed the ceremonial sacrifices once and for all.

Throughout this book the author continues driving home the same message, which is: all that the Jewish faith treasured; the holy objects and rituals, amazing as they all were, were never sufficient to clear ones conscience or cleanse the stain of sin once and for all (v. 9).
Christ's role as our high priest is spelled out in the book of Hebrews 4:14 to 10:18.  He is the sinless Son of God! He is our compassionate Mediator before God the Father:
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. -Hebrews 4:15
No other book of the Bible so powerfully speaks of Jesus’ supremacy. Throughout Hebrews, the author continues to compare Jesus to the heroes of the Jewish faith. With each hero playing his part well, but still not able to compare to Christ Jesus! His sacrifice, His covenant, and His current ministry are far, far greater than anything the others have had to offer.
Jesus is greater than the angels, because He is the divine King (Heb 1:4, 6, 8).
Jesus is greater than Moses, because while Moses was a servant of God, Jesus is the Son of God (Heb 3:3–4).
Jesus is greater than Joshua, because Jesus brings a greater rest to the people of God (Heb 4:8–9).
Jesus is a greater priest than Aaron, because He is sinless and immortal (Heb 7:26–28).

"But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of His own blood, thus securing our eternal redemption." - Hebrews 9:11-12

The more I’ve read and researched,
·         The more I wanted to stop and just worship Him.
·         The more I also felt compelled to stop and examine my own walk and how I fall so short of such a holy God and all that He has done on my behalf.

I believe the author of Hebrews, whoever he might be, has done exactly what he set out to do and did it well. There is so much more we could say, but let’s spend the rest of our time worshiping Him and making sure we have accepted the gift He has given us.
Have you given all of yourself to Jesus?

This song by Hillsong United and sung by, Kari Jobe seemed to fit with our study today. Enjoy!

The Great Exchange {Titus 2}

12:30 AM

Titus 2 is one of my all-time favorite chapters of the Bible.  It’s so full of wonderful teaching and reminders that I find it difficult to limit my discussion to just one place.  Many women would choose verses 3-5 to discuss, but there’s so much more here.

We are reminded here that we should treat our salvation like a beautiful piece of jewelry, using our lives as a way to display the beauty of God’s grace to the world.   God never intended for His salvation be kept for a certain group of people.  We adorn ourselves for the whole world to see so that everyone will come to know Him.

How can we adorn ourselves with God’s saving grace for the world to see?

·       We say ‘NO’ to ungodliness and worldly passions
·       We live self-controlled and godly lives
·       We should live soberly
·       We should live righteously
·       We look for the blessed hope
·       We look for the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ

We glorify God and highlight His grace by resisting evil and doing good.  Our lives of obedience are a response to His salvation and a way to adorn His grace for the world to see.

We not only stand as a witness to the world, we are preparing for “the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.” (v. 13)

We belong to Christ and we wait for Him, because He is the “one who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.” (v. 14)

This scripture reminds us of the importance of obedience as we wait for the glory of Christ’s return.  Do you have an area in your life where you keep hearing a resounding ‘NO’?  Ask God to conform your life more and more to His image.  Our lives should display our gratitude for all the protection and provision God has provided us.
