A Woman After God's Heart

The Blessings ~ Psalm 112

7:00 AM

 Today’s Scripture: Psalm 112 &  Matt 26:64-66 and 1 Peter 3:18-22 again

Just this morning a reporter asked on social media why there are so many angry, middle aged, single, business women in this country. The discussion that ensued was not at all flattering, and I wish I had read this psalm prior to seeing that question, for here in this psalm is the solution to keep from becoming an angry, bitter woman - no matter your age, marital status, or job description.

There have been a lot of books written on how to be successful in life, but I think God's Word contains all we need to be not only successful, but blessed!

A
The psalm begins with, "Blessed is the man who fears the Lord [with awe-inspired reverence and worships Him with obedience],Who delights greatly in His commandments." (Psalm 112:1 AMP)

I chose the Amplified version so that we can all see that the word fear is more of an "awe-inspired reverence" for God and His word, for the one who will be blessed is one who not only is awed by God but takes delight in His word enough to follow what it says.

Psalm 112 reminded me of how the Book of Psalms began in Psalm 1 and Psalm 2 in that the author would like to make a case for the benefits and blessings of following hard after God.  They all seem very similar and I've added the links if you'd like to do your own research, but for today, I thought it would be great to break down the blessings the writer lists for "the man [or woman] who fears the LORD. "

1.) His decisions today, will not only impact him, but future generations!
His descendants/children will be mighty on earth;
The generation of the upright will be blessed.(v.2)
2.) He will experience wealth. Wealth and riches are in his house, (v.3a) I like to think this wealth is not only material wealth, but there is also great wealth found in a peaceful home engulfed in love. A peaceful heart - not anxious, but trusting.
3.) Eternal life : And his righteousness endures forever. (v.3b)

4.) I found this commentary to explain verse 4, Light arises in the darkness for the upright;
.Upright ones are sometimes in the darkness of affliction, under divine desertions, without spiritual joy, and in an uncomfortable condition; when on a sudden light arises to them, like break of day, or the morning light: they have deliverance from affliction, and enjoy prosperity.

5.) He is compassionate to others,  and will be blessed; "Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice." (v.5) The godly also shows grace, mercy, and compassion towards one another, which are attributes of God.

6.) He will be able to stand firm and not waiver. One commentary added: "He shall not be moved for ever (v.6)— Though he may, for a season, be afflicted, yet he shall not be utterly and eternally destroyed, as wicked men shall be."

Verse six also tells that our good reputation shall be precious and honorable, both with God and men. Don't we all want to leave a good and lasting legacy when we leave this life behind?

7.) No fears to face for they will be steadfast in their faith: "They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord." (v.7)

8.) Security without fears and in the end shall be triumphant: "Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear; in the end they will look in triumph on their foes" (v.8)

9.) They are generous and gracious "They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor, their righteousness endures forever; their horn will be lifted high in honor." (v.9)

Matthew Henry said this about Psalm 112: "Blessings are laid up for the faithful and their children's children; and true riches are bestowed on them, with as much of this world's possessions as is profitable for them. In the darkest hours of affliction and trial, the light of hope and peace will spring up within them, and seasonable relief shall turn mourning into joy. From their Lord's example they learn to be kind and full of compassion, as well as just in all their dealings; they use discretion, that they may be liberal in that manner which appears most likely to do good. Envy and slander may for a time hide their true characters here, but they shall be had in everlasting remembrance. They need not fear evil tidings. A good man shall have a settled spirit. And it is the endeavor of true believers to keep their minds stayed upon God, and so to keep them calm and undisturbed; and God has promised them both cause to do so, and grace to do so. Trusting in the Lord is the best and surest way of establishing the heart.

But not so for those who choose not to fear God: "The wicked will see and be vexed, they will gnash their teeth and waste away; the longings of the wicked will come to nothing." (v.10) The saints happiness is to be  envied by the wicked, and their (wicked) desires will die with them, for they were wholly worldly, therefore when these perish, their joy is wiped out and is gone.

The author of Psalm 112 has made an excellent case as to why we are far better off to reverently fear God, which makes me wonder why many don't! Is it that they don't know, or simply don't care? Is the world and all it has to offer them that much more precious at this moment?

But, then I had to also ask myself :

_ Knowing all I know now, am I still chasing after the things of this world at times? Am I like Lot's wife where I tend to look back to the things of this world rather than consider myself dead to this world and sold out to Christ?

_ Are other relationships more important to me than my relationship with the Lord? Have I placed others before Him?

_ Am I shining a light for others to see and bringing others to a saving knowledge of our Lord?

_ Have I forsaken all and wholly following Him each day? Am I storing up treasures in heaven rather than here on earth?

Let's pray:

O Father, You are awesome and mighty and  I pray that You might enable me to have such a grand vision of You that I might fear You, that I might tremble in Your presence. Help me to see that You’re not merely a Redeemer but also a Judge; not merely a God of love, but also of holiness. Help me to set you in Your rightful place in my life and heart. I ask that in my heart the things of this world will pale in comparison in all I've been promised because of all Your Son has done on my behalf. I pray that all I say and do would be pleasing in Your sight and bring you honor and glory You are worthy of.

I also want to pray for _____ and ask that they might fear You just as a son or daughter fears a Father who both loves and disciplines—a Father who extends mercy but also judges. Above all, may they fear You because they love You and desire to seek to please You through Jesus Christ. May this fear of the Lord keep them running hard towards You and away from the things of this world. In Jesus name, Amen,

Blessing,

Bless The Lord

Our Reading: Psalm 103, Isaiah 12:3-6, & John 15:10

Perspective and attitude make all the difference. We have not had opportunity to meet with David or engage him in conversation, but he has shown us the deepest essence of his heart. David’s heart was sure of God’s heart and because of that every fiber of his being was grateful and reverent. Worship naturally flowed from his innermost being because he meditated upon and did not take for granted the unmerited blessings God had provided.

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” v1-2

Have you ever kept a gratitude journal? Apparently David had that habit for he begins to make a list. Included here:

  • God forgives our iniquities. (v3) David certainly had great iniquities, including adultery and murder and he understood the blessing of forgiveness. Without God’s forgiveness there could be no other blessings at all for we could not have relationship with God. All sin separates us from God and there is nothing we can do to bridge that gap. Only God can make us holy.
  • God heals our diseases. (v3) God does not cure every physical illness or infirmity this side of Heaven. David knew that for God did not spare the life of his infant child. But there is healing in our relationship with God. Only He can heal the pain and affliction of sin upon our hearts, souls, and minds. Sometimes, He may also provide us physical healing in this life.
  • God redeems our life from the pit. (v4) David knew dark places and caves where he had to hide from those who wanted to take his life. God protected him and sustained Him in his darkest days. God can sustain us through our trials as well and provide eternal life for us, sparing us the death we deserve.
  • God crowns us with steadfast love and mercy. (V4) God favors us. We get His abundant never ending, unchangeable love and mercy. We get to be adopted into His royal forever family.

As we continue to read through this Psalm, we see that David is just getting started. He continues to list out the wonders of God and God’s mercy and favor upon man. I think my favorite verses, however, describe the God who is compassionate toward us, remembering that we struggle, and muck things up and can be bratty, and selfish and ungrateful. He remembers our limitations and He is patient with us. We may fail Him many times over but His love is bigger than any of our limitations.

“As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more. But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children's children,” (v13‬-‭17‬)

Refection:

  1. Just reading David’s gratitude list lifts my heart. How about yours? Do you think gratitude is necessary to offer true praise and honor to God?
  2. What would be included in your gratitude list? Do you make a habit of not forgetting God’s goodness and mercy toward you? Do you tell others?
  3. Like a loving father, God disciplines us but He doesn’t give up on us. Does it  encourage you to know that God knows your limitations and loves You anyway? Does that make it easier to repent and seek restoration?

Prayer: Father, we thank You for Your many blessings and we want to give You praise and adoration that comes from our innermost being. How blessed we are to have a Father who forgives us, disciplines and teaches us and is ever patient and merciful to us. Your forgiveness is beyond our ability to forgive and Your love is beyond our ability to love. May our hearts ever grow to know and trust Your heart. May we join the psalmist in worship: “Bless the Lord, O my soul,”

Singing a new song - Psalm 96

11:17 AM

Psalm 96, Hebrews 3:7-11

Growing up I remember listening to America’s Top 40 with Casey Kasem. Each week I was excited to hear who held the coveted spot of the new number one song. And each week we too have a new song to sing. One of praise and worship to the Lord for His blessings, glory, and gift of salvation. Because His goodness and mercy are new each morning. (Lam. 3:23) And in our daily Christian walk, when we look, much is the evidence of Him lovingly, working in our lives daily. So how can we help but sing, “great is the Lord and greatly to be praised.” (Ps. 96:4)

Each day God is busy doing something new. He’s building up, tearing down, blessing, intervening, answering prayers, working miracles, and saving souls. For as He says in Isaiah, “Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them. Sing to the LORD a new song, His praise from the end of the earth. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland”  (Is. 42:9-10, 43:18-19)

The “new song” we sing comes from when we experience God in a new way. I love how gotquestions.org puts it. “A new song springs forth unrehearsed from the heart of a worshiper who has been struck anew with wonder at the greatness of God and the salvation He has provided. When we see the mighty hand of God working in a way we’ve never observed before, we can’t help but burst forth with a song we’ve never sung before.” Every day the Lord never ceases to amaze me. Because just when I think I know all there is know about Him, He overwhelms my heart with something new!

All of creation cries out in worship to God’s glory, splendor, and majesty. The heavens, earth, sea, fields, and even the trees, sing to the Lord a new song. For one day God will restore everything His hands have made to its original perfection. From the beginning, God has had His master plan in motion. And with the birth of Jesus Christ, that plan was made real before all mankind. In His amazing love, God planned to once and for all destroy evil and reconcile everything back to Himself, our great Creator. And one day soon, all will sing a new song praising and giving glory to Him alone!

Pause and Reflect -

In this Psalm we are encouraged to sing to the Lord. What songs do you most enjoy singing to the Lord? Why do you like singing those? Why is the Lord worthy of our praise? What changes in nature are you most eager to see when the Lord reigns over all the earth?

Finally, let’s pray together,

Our dearest Father in heaven above, hallowed be Thy name. Father we lift up our voices in praise and thanksgiving for the wonder that You have done in our lives. And we pray that our lives in thought, word, and deed, may be a song of praise to You, and the goodness of Your grace. Father may we declare Your glory, not only among those who know You, but also among those who do not. For You have sent us into this world to bring the good news of Your marvelous works, most of all Your salvation through Jesus Christ. And we thank You for the newness of Your goodness and mercy each morning. In Jesus precious name we pray, Amen.

Blessed to Be a Blessing ~ Psalm 67

8:30 AM

 Today's Scriptures : Psalm 67  & Numbers 6:24-26

This Psalm of praise to the Lord speaks about the blessings of the Lord. It is amended from The High Priest’s prayer of blessing given to Aaron by the Lord to bless Israel. (Numbers 6:22-27). It is both a prayer and a song of praise which was given by the Lord in order to bless His people and I think it couldn't be more perfect for the last week of this semester's study!!

Psalm 67 recalls Aaron's blessing to Israel with its opening words: “May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine upon us” (v. 1). But here in Psalm 67 is where we learn the reason that God is gracious to us, blesses us, and turns His face toward us.

Have you ever wondered about that? ... Why has God chosen to bless you?

The reason is "so that Your ways may be known on earth, Your salvation among all nations” (v. 2 emphasis mine). God blesses us so that we might be a blessing to the world and the world will take notice and begin to praise Him!

May the peoples praise you, God;
    may all the peoples praise you.

May the nations be glad and sing for joy,
    for you rule the peoples with equity
    and guide the nations of the earth.

May the peoples praise you, God;
    may all the peoples praise you. (Psalm 67:3-5)

Have you ever thought of that? He blesses us to be a blessing to others! He also blesses us so that the world around us will see God, recognize Him, and begin to praise Him! But, here is the most amazing thing we find here in Psalm 67 that I don't want you to miss.

 It is here in Psalm 67 that these two avenues (for lack of a better word) meet: God’s blessing to us (Numbers 6) and His promise to bless all nations through Abraham in Genesis 12. AND it is even more amazing that these two great avenues meet in an act of worship here in Psalm 67.

Did you know it is through worship that we can fully recognize who we truly are, and what it means for us to be blessed? We are blessed to be a blessing.

Beloved, our Father blesses us so that those who have not yet experienced the blessings of God might come to know Him and join in our growing circle of praise to Him. I've mentioned before that praise becomes contagious, like a fire that can spread! No wonder our enemy seeks to discourage us and rob us of our joy!

Which is why I think it would be awesome if we can turn verse 7 into our prayer today!

May God bless us still,
    so that all the ends of the earth will fear him. (v.7)

O sisters, would you join me in praising and thanking our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ and pray He will "bless us still, so that all the ends of the earth will fear him."?

~ On a personal note, it's been a blessing to study with you this fall and I look forward to being back with you in January! Have an amazing Christmas season and a truly blessed 2023!

Til then,
Sue

Counting our Blessings {Psalm 136}

7:30 PM

Scripture Reading: Psalms 136

“Count your blessings; name them one by one…” Do you remember the next line to this old hymn? I wonder if the writer of this hymn had thought of  Psalm 136 when they wrote it.

Both the Psalm and the hymn remind us of how important it is to be grateful! I also loved this picture Max Lucado describes for us:

The grateful heart is like a magnet sweeping over the day, collecting reasons for gratitude. A zillion diamonds sparkle against the velvet of your sky every night.  Gratitude gets us through the hard stuff. To reflect on your blessings is to rehearse God’s accomplishments. To rehearse God’s accomplishments is to discover his heart. To discover his heart is to discover not just good gifts but the Good Giver. Gratitude always leaves us looking at God and away from dread. It does to anxiety what the morning sun does to valley mist. It burns it up.”- Max Lucado

I have a friend, who for years battled with depression and anxiety until she began starting each day by writing down 12 things she was thankful for. She will not begin her day without doing this one act first.

How about you? Do you find yourself being grateful for the most part, or do you tend to accentuate the negatives in life? I’ll admit I used to be a pessimist- the glass half empty kind of girl, until I chose to start counting my blessing each morning. I now can see gratitude is a CHOICE! And given the choice, I’d much rather be filled with joy and thanksgiving then weighed down by all the cares of the world. Don't you agree? Did you know that:

I’ll leave you with the a little prayer George Herbert, a 17th-century British poet, included in his poem titled, Gratefulness: “Thou that hast given so much to me, give one thing more: a grateful heart.”

I pray that will be our prayer as well.

SoulSearching Sunday~It’s A Beautiful Life

Week Thirty-six

Welcome!  We pray that you have all had a precious time worshipping the Lord this morning!  Below you will find some thought provoking questions that will provide you a starting point to your journal writing to complete this week.  We hope that you will find this time soul satisfying!

Our reading this week was Matthew 6 - 18...

1. How do you think Jesus would evaluate your prayers? Because of life’s fast pace, we can easily fall into the habit of praying by rote or formula. Today, refresh your prayer life by talking to God as though He were sitting beside you. You may want to write Him a letter, pouring out everything that is on your heart.

When you pray, don’t babble on and on as people of other religions do. They think their prayers are answered only by repeating their words again and again. (Matthew 6:7)

2. List the most meaningful good gifts that God has given to you. Read aloud the list to the LORD, and thank Him. Like Katherine Bates, who penned “American the Beautiful” atop Pikes Peak as she contemplated the beauty of Creation, perhaps you will feel inspired to write a poem about the beauty of God’s blessings to you.

If you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask Him. (Matthew 7:11)

3. What kinds of tyranny can dominate your life? Guilt? Anxiety? Busyness? Give to Jesus whatever burdens you are bearing today. Find rest and freedom in Him.

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke fits perfectly, and the burden I give you is light. (Mathew 11:28-30)

The Blessings & Benefits Found in Psalm 119

12:00 AM

I’ll admit early on in my Christian walk, I tended to avoid Psalm 119, or started it, but never read to the end. It was just too long in my opinion, but once I learned more about this Psalm I grew to appreciate all that’s here; which is why I thought I’d write about it today, just in case there might be others out there like the younger me who have tended in the past to skip over it!

Psalm 119 is the longest Psalm, and is actually written as an acrostic poem. The verses of each stanza begin with the same letter of the Hebrew alphabet. There are 22 stanzas, equal to 22 letters of the (Hebrew) alphabet, with 8 verses each, for a grand total of 176 verses!

The author didn’t sign his poem, but some have suggested it may have been Ezra the priest who wrote it around the time that the temple was being rebuilt, and I’ll admit, I like the idea of Ezra being the author for we already know that he had “set his heart to study the law of the Lord and to practice it, and to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel. (Ezra 7:10). BUT others have suggested David, or possibly Daniel. All of these men are possible candidates because each had experienced severe persecution in their lives, and persecution of those who hold fast to the Word of God is a theme throughout Psalm 119.

However, the overall message of Psalm 119 focuses on the truth of God’s Word. I believe the author wanted to encourage us to stay close and focused on His Word no matter what is swirling around us in this world. Living with the knowledge of God’s ways, is freeing! And obeying His Word above all else is the only way to truly be blessed.

For we know that His Word is powerful, living, and active. It never changes, because He never changes, and it’s sharper than any two-edged sword. His words come straight from His heart to ours, and are designed to be a love letter for our life!

The first two verses remind us, that we are "blessed" as we walk in His Truths, and seek Him with all our heart, and I thought it would be cool to list as many of the blessings and benefits I could find in Psalm 119, but I’m sure there’s more, and if you find some I’ve missed, please feel free to add them!

His Word creates a thankful heart. I shall give thanks to You with uprightness of heart, when I learn Your righteous judgments.”v.7
His Word breathes new life into us when discouraged. “My soul clings to the dust, give me life according to your word!” v.25
His Word exposes thoughts contrary to God. “Put false ways far from me and graciously teach me your law!” v.29
His Word turns our eyes to what’s important. “Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things, and give me life in your ways.”v.37
His Word fills us with hope. “Remember your word to your servant, in which you have made me hope.” v.49
His Word brings comfort. “This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life.” V.50
His Word causes us to be thankful. “At midnight I rise to praise you because of your righteous rules.” V.62
His Word gives us wisdom. “I understand more than the aged, for I keep your precepts.” V.100
His Word feeds a hungry soul.  “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” v.103
His Word guides us. “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”v.105
His Word brings life. “I am severely afflicted, give me life, O Lord, according to your word!” v.107
His Word keeps us from hanging around with the wrong people. “Depart from me, you evildoer, that I may keep the commandments of my God.” V.115
His Word gives us a longing for eternity. “My eyes long for your salvation and for the fulfillment of your righteous promise.” V.123
His Word encourages us. “I rise before dawn and cry for help. I hope in your word” v.147
His Word gives us peace. “Great peace have those who love your law, nothing can make them stumble.” V.165
His Word leads us back to Christ. “I have gone astray like a lost sheep, seek your servant for I do not forget your commandments.” V.176

The author has definitely done a masterful job encouraging his readers to get into the Word and stay there, hasn’t he? I can honestly say my own passion for His Word has been renewed as I've read through this Psalm to pull out the benefits of keeping in it, and I pray it will have the same effect on you too!

The Blessing in Brokenness {Psalm 33-36}

7:30 PM

Did you know there are blessings in being broken? It seems like such a contradiction of words. The world seems to exalt pride-filled people and look down on broken ones. We applaud success and shun the broken, but not God, never God. In fact, it is in our pain and brokenness that God is closest to us, whether we realize it or not.

 Psalm 34:18, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit”.

The word brokenness refers to the state of defeat and surrender we experience when hardships come and we can’t seem to get past it. None of us enjoy the feeling of brokenness, but it’s powerful in bringing the spiritual benefits we covet into our lives. Being broken can also give us a new perspective on the Lord’s plans for our lives.
Brokenness tends to be God’s antidote for our self-centeredness. I like what Rick Warren had to say about what God can do in our broken state:

God says,
·         For the heart that’s guilty, I’ll give you a heart that’s forgiven.
·         For the heart that’s resentful, I’ll give you a heart that’s full of peace.
·         For the heart that’s anxious, I’ll give you heart that’s confident.
·         For the heart that’s lonely, I’ll give you a heart full of love.
·         That heart that has been bitter and angry? I’ll give you a heart that is forgiving and loving and generous instead. Let me do a heart transplant in you. I will set you free.
Why do we need freedom? Because we’re all enslaved. We’re a slave to the expectations of other people. We’re slaves to past memories. We’re slaves to future fears. We’re slaves to current pressure. We’re slaves to the opinions of society, and on and on and on.

If we’re honest, I think we’d probably all admit that most of our time spent before God has consisted of asking Him to bless us. We ask God for healing, for success… we want Him to bless our family, our jobs, our plans and so on, but have you ever asked for brokenness? Even though His word is very clear there will be blessings from it;

For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.” – Isaiah 57:15

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6

All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the Lord. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.” – Isaiah 66:2

I know up until now I’ve tried to paint a roses picture of brokenness, but there is a tremendous amount of pain that comes from,
Broken lives.
Broken marriages.
Broken relationships.
Broken families.
And broken dreams.

Along with our brokenness come the lies that whisper to the deepest parts of our soul during our weakest moments in order to keep us down and broken, “You’re useless… a failure…beyond restoring… you’ll never experience joy again…” And we struggle to hide the scars of shame, rejection, and the lack of self-worth.

BUT God can break through ALL of that.

With God nothing and no one is ever beyond healing! No one is ever too broken for restoration. He can actually bring us to the point where we will glory in our scars, and have an amazing story to tell, if we are willing! The Lord once said, “Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh; is anything too difficult for Me?” (Jeremiah 32:27) Do you take Him at His word?

With God, brokenness has the POWER, unlike anything else, to bring forth new beauty and strength in our lives! It’s also powerful in inspiring others going through where you’ve already been!

We have a Healer; One who is in the business of restoration! Who is able to put the broken pieces (families, marriages, lives, etc) that no longer seem to fit, back into a perfect design, for He was once broken and poured out for us! He doesn’t simply patch us back together, but beautifully pieces everything together with grace so that we’ll be stronger, and more beautiful than before.

That’s Jesus, my Savior! Who brings new LIFE to all that is broken, for He was willing to take on the brokenness of the world in order to set us free!
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you are in a season of brokenness; broken dreams, marriage, relationships, whatever it may be I'd like to pray for you and have the others on WitW praying as well. Please either leave your request in the comments, or on our Facebook group  and we'll commit to praying that you'll soon begin to see God bringing restoration in your life! I'd truly be blessed to do that for you!
Drawing Near To God {Deuteronomy 1:1-4:49}
12:00 AM
Monday Feb. 12 Drawing Near To God {Deuteronomy 1:1-4:49}
For forty years Israel had been wandering in the wilderness. Now before finally entering the promised land, Moses, who is 120 years old, gives the people a series of messages. In them he reiterates the importance of complete obedience to God, the consequences of choosing not to, and most of all to remember each step of their walk with Him.
Moses begins by giving a history of the Israelites and their journey after the Exodus. All God wanted was for the people to have faith in Him and to believe that what He promised, He would fulfill. He wanted with them, like He does with us, a close personal relationship built on love and obedience. They were His chosen people to whom He offered not only a land filled with milk and honey, but victory over their enemies. But instead of trusting God and His vow to go before them and fight on their behalf, (v. 1:30) they grumbled against Him and filled themselves with unbelief. An unbelief that caused a whole generation to perish. Instead of drawing near to God, praying for His protection and keeping His commandments, they went their own way, followed their own desires, and caused their own destruction.
I think about the story of the Israelites and find myself shaking my head. I wonder how a people who had seen the mighty hand of God working on their behalf could so easily turn away from Him and His love. And then I think about my own life. How many times have I seen the hand of God at work and still grumbled against Him? How many blessings have I missed out on because instead of walking in trust and obedience, I gave in to fear and rebellion? How many days, weeks, and months have I wasted wandering in the wilderness?
Thankfully, I serve a loving and forgiving God. Even after the people rejected Him, God cared for them as His precious children, meeting their every need. I too am His precious child, and with each step of my spiritual walk He cares for me. No matter how far I may wander, He is always there. Through the highs and the lows, the good and the bad, He is loving me and patiently waiting to welcome me back. By refusing to trust God and submitting to His perfect plans, an entire generation of Israelites missed out on the joy of seeing God’s promises fulfilled. I would do well to remember their example of what happens when I refuse to trust and draw near to Him.
For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God whenever we call on Him?” (vs. 4:7) The people of Israel were God’s special possession, His very own. He gloriously and graciously led them and performed wondrous miracles in their sight. They could call on Him at any time, for any reason. When we receive Jesus as our Savior, we too become a part of God’s very own. He is near to us and just like the people of Israel, we can call on Him. God wants us to have the very best life possible. There is no one who loves you more, will fight harder on your behalf, or is more worthy of your complete faith and devotion. So draw near to Him, remember Him in all things, believe and obey, and watch the blessings flow!
God's Messages to Us Through Jacob {Genesis 25:19-28}
12:00 AM
The very first time I decided to read through the Bible, I began in the middle of the year with the New Testament. I finished Revelations in December and started reading Genesis in January. I was completely taken aback by the sharp contrast of seeing God in all His glory, worshiped incredibly at the end of the Bible and seeing the sin of man and his lack of worship on display in the beginning. I couldn’t help but wonder how or why Almighty God would ever want to deal with man! Have you ever wondered the same?
Jacob’s parents knew that their son, Esau, sought to kill Jacob so they sent him away. Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. Along the way, Jacob stopped for the night to sleep. He placed a stone under his head to use as a pillow. Do you find yourself wondering how Jacob is feeling at the moment? Was he sorry, worried, fearful (remember he was never the adventurer)?
While sleeping, Jacob dreams of a stairway that reached from the ground to heaven. Along the stairway, angels of God were moving up and down, and above the stairway, Jacob sees God who tells Jacob,
“I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread from the west to the east, from the north to the south. All people on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go and will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until my promise is fulfilled.”
When Jacob woke, “[he] took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on its top.  He called the name of that place Bethel…
 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey so that I may one day return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord will be my God and this stone I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house and everything that you give me, I will give back one tenth.”
Here’s the exciting messages Jacob has for us that we can hold onto to:
God never gives up on us!
Jacob is a perfect example of how sinful man/woman can be drawn nearer to God!  Jacob had made a mess of things because of his selfish desires and was NOT seeking God, but in spite of all Jacob had done... in spite of his evil intentions and heart, God came to him and gives him a precious promise, “I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread from the west to the east, from the north to the south. All people on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go and will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until my promise is fulfilled.”
Just like with us. God seeks US, and blesses us with great and precious promises when we are not worthy or deserving of any of it!
God is with Jacob no matter what, and He will also be with us!
We’ll see this scenario played out quite often in the Bible. Even though, up to this point, Jacob’s actions have been less than worthy of God’s grace, God reiterates his plan to Jacob. When God gave the message found in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you… plans for [your] welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.It was during a time of discipline to give them hope, which is exactly what God is doing here with Jacob.
God’s plans for us will always be fulfilled!
God reiterates to Jacob the covenant he made with Abraham and Isaac, promising them land and descendants. The path Jacob took to get where he was was full of deception but, God’s plan for Abraham’s people would still be fulfilled no matter what, and that’s also true in each of our lives. We can rest assured God’s plans will succeed no matter how we mess up.
Jacob makes a vow, but why was Jacob’s promise conditional?
There have been various translations of this section but most agree that Jacob’s vow appears to be conditional. However, they also agree that the emphasis does not necessarily have to be placed on the word “if”. Jacob could have meant something along the lines of “when I return home safe and alive, I will make him my God forever”.
In Jacob’s day, vows were as serious, and binding, as a written contract today. Jacob’s affirmation to follow God was a well-thought-out promise that he certainly intended to keep.
How about you? Have you vowed to follow God? Have you placed conditions on that vow? Or have you vowed to follow Him no matter the consequences? Would you today, build an altar to God and reiterate any vow you’ve made to Him and your intent to keep it!?
