Confession

From Groaning to Shouts of Joy! ~ Psalm 32

9:17 AM

 Today's Reading: Psalm 32 &  Romans 4:1-12 2 Corinthians 5:17-19

Upon my first reading Psalm 32, I couldn't help but to notice the huge contrast between David's groaning in verses 3-4,

"When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer."

And rejoining in verse 11,

"Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous; shout for joy, all you upright in heart."

What happened to bring about such a change in David?

"I acknowledged my sin to You,
And I did not hide my wickedness;
I said, “I will confess [all] my transgressions to the Lord”;
And You forgave the guilt of my sin." -Psalm 32:5

Psalm 32 is a psalm of thanksgiving. It is called a “Mashcil,” which means to give instruction or to understand and the reader would be wise to heed the wisdom found in the psalm.

The Hebrew word translated “blessed” could actually be translated “Oh, how blissfully happy!” I like the sound of that.  Charles Spurgeon noted that this blissful peace came after David’s confession of his adulterous affair with Bathsheba ( 2 Samuel 11 & 12), recorded in Psalm 51.

I feel to truly understand this "Mashcil" we need to break down the true definitions of some of the terms David uses here.

Blessed is he whose transgression (v.1) Transgression is willful rebellion; willfully crossing the line of something you know is wrong and doing it anyway.

But thetransgression is forgiven”(v.1), Forgiveness is when the burden is lifted up and carried away. Notice David's transgression was weighing down upon him in verse 4, "For day and night Your hand [of displeasure] was heavy upon me;
My energy (vitality, strength) was drained away as with the burning heat of summer." The consequences of our transgressions are never suppose to be pleasant.

Whose sin(v.1) Sin is a failure to keep God’s law. The Greek word translated sin in the New Testament means to miss the mark

But the “sin is covered,”(v.1) that is, blotted out or in these days, redacted, so we can no longer see them.

"Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute inequity"(v.2). Impute is actually an accounting term which would mean that The Lord is no longer holding the sinner responsible for this debt. The debt is canceled!

"Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute inequity" (v.2) Iniquity is a crookedness or deviation from the right path; more like going astray.

 "And in whose spirit there is no deceit" (v.2) David is speaking here of self deceit. We can often deceive ourselves into believing that our actions are justified when they clearly go against God's word. David explains that there is no self deceit here because he has owned up to his sin (see v 5).

David seems to cover all the bases here, but it may be something the average reader would miss unless he/she knew the definitions to each of these term and truly only then can we understand why David  felt it necessary to say all that he did here.

Knowing all of this has brought so much more meaning to this psalm for me and I wanted to pass it along to you.

But I believe the key that David doesn't want his readers to miss is the contrast between one who covers over their sin and transgressions and one who readily confesses them,
Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but he who trusts in and relies on the Lord shall be surrounded with mercy, compassion and lovingkindness." Psalm 32:10

 Our sin cannot be covered by God until man uncovers by confessing it. I immediately thought of 1 John 1:8-9,  "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
11

And David goes on to share with us how wonderful it will be for us if we choose t
o walk each day, in the light and freedom of the grace of our God all because of what Jesus has already done for us, "Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous [who actively seek right standing with Him];
Shout for joy, all you upright in heart.-Psalm 32:10-11(Emphasis mine)

Let me ask you:

_Are you willfully walking in disobedience and rebellion in any area of your life?
_Have you knowingly missed the mark in some area?
_Knowing the freedom that comes from forgiveness, have you freely forgiven others remembering that God will not forgive you, unless you also forgive? (Mt 6:9-13)
_What does God most need you to do right now?

Let's Pray:

O Father, thank You that I can receive forgiveness at any time in my life, no matter how extreme or far I have strayed from You. Whether I acted willfully, or in ignorance, I'm so very grateful for the promises in Your word that reassures me that You will readily forgive and not hold it against me each time I come to You and confess my transgressions and sins.
 I pray that you would forgive me for __________. Help me to receive healing from the inside out through Your love. Thank You in advance for Your work of redemption in my life and the power of Your Spirit. I pray that You would pour Your Spirit into me; filling me and use me to be a blessing to others in my life. Thank You for Your precious Son, Jesus, who has made all this possible, and it is in His name I pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Truly Forgiven {1John 1}

7:00 PM

1 John 1

I'm writing today to the one who feels she never measures up!
To the people-pleaser. To the one who is forever striving, but never achieving. The one who never feels that she has reached her goal; who forever falls short. I'm writing, but its The Lord's message that He longs for you to hear.

...God is Light [He is holy, His message is truthful], and in Him there is no darkness at all [no sin, no wickedness, no imperfection]. (1John 1:5)

God is Love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent His only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him.  In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation [atoning sacrifice]for our sins.(1John 4:8-10)

Christ's death on the cross was not just a symbol of God's love for 'good people', but for ALL people! "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

A few months ago I was battling a persistent migraine that just would not go away! I’d been trying everything I could think of and nothing seemed to be working!! I even stated that fact to the Lord one morning when He woke at 2 am with the migraine still there!
It was then that He reminded me of 1Thesalonians 5:16-18, Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you!”

So, I laid there and began praising Him; thinking of all the things I had to give thanks for and the next thing I knew it was morning! My migraine headache was still with me, but my whole countenance had changed! I was full of Joy and Jesus and I wasn’t going to allow that headache to keep me down any longer; so I dressed and went out to buy groceries for the pantry by then was pretty bare!

I was coming around the corner of an isle, when suddenly I spotted an older women looking intently at something. Her eyes never came up to meet mine, but suddenly for the briefest moment, it was as if the Lord parted a veil and I could see how intently, deeply, compassionately …(there just aren’t words adequate enough to describe) how desperately He LOVES US!! In that brief moment He absolutely TOOK MY BREATH AWAY!

I honestly couldn’t breathe, but suddenly everything made sense!!

Of course:

  • He sent His Son to die in our place!! We were helpless to save ourselves!! His love is so intense that He would have died a thousands deaths had the Law required it!!
  • He is faithful to forgive-"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness." (1John 1:9) He is Light and wants us to fellowship in His light!
  • Your sins are removed from you as far as the east is from the west! "As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us." (Psalms 103:12,)
  • And toss them into the depths of the sea! "...He will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea."( Micah 7:19,)

Not only does God forgive our sins, but He FORGETS them! He chooses not to remember our sins for HIS own sake! Notice, "I, even I, am he that blots out your transgressions for mine own sake, and will remember them no longer." (Isaiah 43:25)

If He has forgotten them, why do we still hang onto them? He’s told us to stop looking at the past, but press forward towards the future in Philippians 3:13, "...this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching for those things which are before."

He calls us a new creation in 2 Corinthians 5:17, … if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!” Why is it we don’t often feel new? Why is it that each new day is a chance at a new beginning, but we seem to be stuck and unable to break free? Just imagine your life if you truly took God at His word! Just imagine the intimacy you two would share!

That sweet, sweet intimate communion is always just one step away!

Remember:

If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just [true to His own nature and promises], and will forgive our sins and cleanse us continually from all unrighteousness [our wrongdoing, everything not in conformity with His will and purpose].(1John 1:9)

God wants us to be free and forgiven!! He longs for us to allow Jesus' blood to wash our consciences clean! (Hebrews 9:14)

Why has God chosen to make us new creations? Because He longs to walk with us; to fellowship with us just as He once did with Adam in the garden. How about you? Will you take that one step today, and tomorrow, and the next day... until you make it home?

This song from Lauren Daigle sort of speaks to all of this. Enjoy!

Guilt Free Life {Revelations 12:1-14:20}

1:35 AM

Revelation 12:10 New International Version (NIV)

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:“Now have come the salvation and the power    and the kingdom of our God,    and the authority of his Messiah.For the accuser of our brothers and sisters,    who accuses them before our God day and night,    has been hurled down.

Has it happened to you? Do you often fall into the trap of thinking you are the worst person on the face of the earth and that nobody else does the things that you do?

Romans 3:23 says that WE HAVE ALL fallen short of the glory of God (excellence). This means that every man, woman or child that was ever born or will ever be has a problem with sin. But the GOOD NEWS is that God provided and answer to our problem.

Just as we have all sinned, we have been justified and made righteous through the redemption provided through Christ, as a result, as believers in Jesus we now have the "rightness" instead of the "wrongness".

Satan wants us to feel wrong, unworthy and like helpless messes. He knows that without confidence we will never step out in faith to fulfull God destinies for our lives. He wants to keep us captives in the prison of self-hatred, self-rejection to prevent us from making progress or even being a thread to him and his kingdom of darkness.

We must believe we have made righteous in God's eyes, so we may actually start behave rightly. Believe it first, so you can live it. For we cannot produce the fruit of something for which no seed as been sown.

2 Corinthians 5:21 New International Version (NIV)

God made him who had no sin to be sin[a] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Satan is called "the accuser". He tries to make us feel guilty and condemned. When we feel like that we must remember that God does not make us feel that way, instead, God wants us to experience His love and feel the freeing power of His forgiveness.
Guilt depresses us and makes us feel as we're under a heavy burden. But Jesus came to lift us up and to bring the good news that our sins... all of them have been forgiven and forgotten!
Resist the guilt and condemnation by embracing the salvation and authority of Christ in your life!!

What Does it Mean to Be Forgiven? {Luke 23}

8:00 PM

What does it mean to be forgiven? Is it something we must earn, or is it freely given?
If someone were to ask you these questions, what would you say? How would you describe forgiveness and how best to attain it?
Did you know that nearly every religion in this world is centered on the idea that forgiveness must be earned; that we must do something, or behave a certain way in order to be forgiven? The one and only exception is Christianity.
The crux of the Christian message is that sin must be punished, and there’s no way people can earn their own forgiveness. Therefore, Jesus had to come to earth, live the perfect life we could not live and die the death we deserved to die so that He could pay the penalty for our sins, and we could gain the forgiveness we so desperately need and could never be good enough to earn.
I don’t think anyone knew the meaning of this better than Barabbas that fateful day we read about in Luke 23 today.
If you studied a map of Jerusalem during that century, you’d discover that Barabbus was placed in a cell far enough away from the crowd before Pilate to hear the roar of the crowd and what they were shouting, but not close enough to hear the words of Pilate. I’m certain his ears must have perked up when he heard, “We want Barabbas!” I like to think he got as close to the window as he could only to hear the crowd next yell, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” At that point he must have felt his fate was sealed. There was no way of escape; he would get exactly what he deserved.
I wonder what he was thinking as he heard the guards footsteps coming closer to his cell knowing they were coming for him…hearing the key in the lock and seeing the door swing open… only to hear the guards tell him he was free to go! Can you imagine the moment Barabbas heard the words, “You’re free to go, for another will die in your place this day.”?
I can’t know for certain, but if I had been the one set free that day, I believe I would have run to see this man who was to die in my place. I would have wanted to be among the crowd watching the three crucified, all the while knowing I should have been the one hanging on that cross. What could have Barabbas been thinking as he heard the crowds mocking and laughing at this man who took his place? And then to hear this man, who had been beaten so badly that he hardly resembled a man at all (Is 52:14) say,” Father, forgive these people, for they don’t know what they are doing?” Who could be so forgiving?
 I also wonder if Barabbas had known the other two men on either side of Jesus. Had they been friends; co-convicts? What did he think when Jesus promised the one, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”? If he did know them, then he, more than anyone, knew that he was the last one who deserved to be in paradise!
We don’t know what happened to Barabbas after he was set free from the punishment of his crimes. We don’t know if he ever gained eternal freedom, but we do know it was possible! Our God is an equal opportunity God and we all are offered the same gift of forgiveness and able to spend eternity in paradise!
It doesn’t matter what you’ve done in the past, you can gain the same forgiveness as the murderer did that day. You can be forgiven and free to forgive others.
When you know you are forgiven, your past can stay in the past and your future can be totally different because you’ve been set free from all the guilt and shame over what you’ve done, because nothing you could ever do is more significant than what Jesus has already done for you on the cross that day. When Jesus declared, “It is finished” (John 19:30), He meant that the full price for our sins had been paid. We only need to ask Him:
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.- 1 John 1:9-10
And once we’ve confessed to Him, any accusations you keep hearing won’t be from Him, because he won’t bring up your past again:
“For as far as the east is from the west,
    so far has he removed our transgressions from us”- Psalm 103:12
When you know, that you know, that you know, you are forgiven, you’re set free to live a new life with Him for all eternity!

Blessings!
