Ephesians 1:17-19

Jesus Christ our Song- Psalms 13

12:00 AM

Please read Psalm 13

As we read this Psalm we find in the first verse a desperate cry from David. He was going through a very difficult situation and his feelings were of despair and hopelessness! Have you been in this situation? I have… many times, to a point when I’ve cried like the Psalmist:

“Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?”  (Psalm13:1)

Of course, God did not forget David. God did not hide His face from David -or any of us- but David felt like it. When we have such strong feelings then the feelings create their own reality, which can in a way distort the truth. David felt God had forgotten him, and felt God was hiding. So, in a sense, it was true for David, but true according to what he was feeling at the moment, and not according to fact.

It is so important to remember we are not to rely on our emotions, on our feelings because:

The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.  Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)

We can't live by our feelings because of this. In this sense, it was all right for David to feel these emotions, and good to take them to God, but he should never accept the reality of feelings as a definite reality.

But we should:” 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh”. Romans 13:14

I praise our Father for His Word, for those amazing Psalms we can run to whenever we are under trials and as soon as His Word starts to sink into our souls, as the rain sinks into the dry land… then we feel renewed, and our lament turns into praise though His Holy Spirit in us! (Psalms 30:11)

Yes, as we continue to focus on God then our burden seems lighter and then we can pray like David did on verse 3:

“Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
Give light (life) to my eyes, or I will sleep the sleep of death,” (AMP)

“Give light (life) to my eyes”… in the NIV we also read “lighten mine eyes”. This is what Paul prayed for the Christians in Ephesus:

”... that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power.(Ephesians 1:17-19)

Right after praying this way, he actually received God’s light into his spiritual eyes so he could clearly see and recognize WHO he was trusting, -right at that moment and many other times before- just as if a fog had cleared away from his eyes!

But I have trusted and relied on and been confident in Your lovingkindness and faithfulness; My heart shall rejoice and delight in Your salvation.” (13:5)

Finally his hope was renewed and he recognized he could always trust in God's mercy. Yes, when we can't trust anything else, we should always trust in His abundant mercy!

I will sing to the Lord, Because He has dealt bountifully with me.” (13:6)

With enlightened eyes, David then is able to bring to his memory “who” he is in God, and joyfully can declare God's goodness, and so can we!

Yes, let us rejoice in Him because of His unfailing Love, He IS and always has been so GOOD to us, even when we deserve nothing from Him!! To Him be the Glory and the Honor Forever!!

Colossians 3

Sing Loud, Sing Proud {Colossians 3}

1:00 AM

Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.”.....Martin Luther

It doesn’t get much better than driving in your car, the sun shining, windows down, and your favorite song blaring on the radio. Whether it be from the lyrics, the beat, or the melody, music has the amazing ability to bring forth a variety of physical responses. The perfect sad song can console a broken heart, whereas a love song can put into words all the feelings romance can bring. An anthem can inspire action, a sports chant unify, and an old familiar children’s song educate. Music is one of God’s most beautiful gifts, and I couldn’t imagine life without it. But meant for more than just entertainment, music is an important part of the Christian walk of faith.

In Colossians 3 the Apostle Paul gives us guidelines and characteristics we should practice as followers of Jesus. And music is included in his list of instructions. “Let the Word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” (vs. 16) Knowing the capacity music has to change both hearts and lives, here Paul tells us to use the songs we sing to both teach the Word of God, and to gently advise those who may need correcting. And we should do so with hearts of thanksgiving and with the goals of helping each other in our walk of faith, and most of all to glorify God.

The greatest purpose music can serve is when we use it as God intended, as a means to worship Him. When the music we play and the songs we sing declare our devotion, thankfulness, and appreciation, we show both God, and world around us, that we have hearts abounding in love for the Lord. “While the word of Christ enables us to worship God in truth, singing allows us to worship Him in spirit. While to worship rightly we must know God as revealed in His Word of truth, if that truth doesn’t move our hearts, something is wrong.Singing is one way to express our love for God and gratitude for what He’s done for us in Christ. It’s no accident that the longest book in the Bible is a song book and God called its main author a man after His heart. Throughout history, whenever the hearts of  God’s people have been right before Him, there has been joyful singing and the writing of new songs of praise”....Steven J. Cole

A minister once said that music is a way to give voice to the overflowing joy and deep adoration we feel in our hearts for God. And again in Ephesians 5:19 Paul instructs us to speak to one another, “in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” When I think of all God has done and continues to do for me each and every day, I can’t help but have a melody in my heart and a song of joy on my lips. And although the voice God gave me may not be able to carry a tune to save my life, I will sing just the same. I will sing loud, I will sing proud, and I will sing a song of God’s greatness!

Hiding God's Word in our Heart

Psalm 42:8 ~ Music ~ His Song

Welcome to Scripture Saturday!

This coming week's memory verse is Psalm 42:8...

By day the Lord directs His love, at night His song is with me—a prayer to the God of my life. (NIV)

I absolutely love the worship song time at service every Sunday. Lifting my voice (even though it’s off key) to the Lord, rejoicing in WHO He is, brings tears often to my eyes.  And at home, I worship Him when I open my Bible to the book of Psalms. This is a book of love songs…songs TO and ABOUT Him. The Psalms are filled with songs that share many of the same emotions I have about the Lord of my life.  Every day… “I will sing to the LORD because He has been so good to me!” (Psalm 13:6)

As C.S. Lewis said, “The most valuable thing the Psalms do for me is to express the same delight in God which made David dance.”

So make a sing to the Lord along with me today!

Have a blessed day and week everyone!
