God’s Promises: Elizabeth

11:30 AM

In the story of Elizabeth, we see the faithfulness of God to Elizabeth and her husband as He blesses them with the bountiful fulfillment of His promises. In fact, Elizabeth’s name even declares hope in God’s promises. In Hebrew, the name is “Elisheva” which means God’s oath or God’s promise. In the Greek, “Elizabeth” means God’s abundance.

Do you feel like you are waiting for God to intervene in your life? If so, you are not alone. From this story we learn that just because we are waiting it doesn’t mean that God is not there or that God doesn’t care. Elizabeth and her husband Zechariah had been waiting. They were waiting for God to bless them with a child. In that day, lineage was important and to be barren was often considered a curse. In fact, if a wife was barren, it gave right to the man to seek divorce.

But this couple didn’t concern themselves with what society thought their life should look like. They were both from priestly lineage and they remained faithfully married and serving the Lord. “Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.” (v6). God’s silence in their lives didn’t deter them from trusting Him and serving Him. God had not just been silent to this couple but He had been silent to the people of Israel for 400 years and yet the priests continued to carry out their duties. It was in this duty that Zechariah, who faithfully prayed for a family of his own, would have the honor of a special visit and promise from an angel of God.

“But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.” (13-15)

Zecharia may have struggled to accept this promise initially but Elizabeth rejoiced in it. Imagine thinking that your biological clock quit ticking and God tells you that His clock, His timetable is all that matters. He rewarded her patience and faithfulness. Her response: ““The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.””(v25)

As amazing as this miracle was in Elizabeth’s life, she would be granted the blessing of witnessing an even greater promise fulfilled. Her son would point others to the promised Messiah and the infant John began doing this even from the womb.

“When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”” (41-45)

Elizabeth wasn’t just grateful for how she had been blessed in her personal circumstances but she was genuinely happy for the greater blessing placed upon Mary. Imagine as a seasoned older woman what a comfort she must have been to the young teenage virgin who was also a mother to be. She admired that Mary believed and trusted in what God had promised and I’m sure she encouraged her faith.

In Elizabeth’s story, we can be encouraged to believe in God’s promises too. We can be encouraged to remain faithful even when we feel that God is being silent. We can be encouraged to wait for God’s perfect plan and purposes to be revealed in our lives. We can learn from her selfless example and rejoice in the promises and blessings we see God extend to others.

Believe And Obey, The Words Elizabeth Lived By

12:30 PM

Good morning and welcome to our study of the women in the Bible. As we dig into each of these remarkable women and their stories, I think you’ll find that even though they lived thousands of years ago, they have much in common with women of today. For they share the same struggles, triumphs, joys, and sorrows, that we all experience as women of God. So let’s start with Elizabeth. One of the greatest heroines of faithfulness and obedience the Bible has to offer.

Elizabeth is only mentioned in the first chapter of Luke. But even the little written tells us some amazing things about her great faith in God. Coming from a very prominent family descended from the line of Aaron, she married Zacharias, a priest from the division of Abijah. And Luke tell us that both Elizabeth and Zacharias were, “righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all of the commandments and requirements of the Lord.” (vs. 6) Yet even with their upstanding status before God they had no children, for Elizabeth was barren.

Year after year Elizabeth and her husband prayed for a child. And year after year their prayers went unanswered. Having struggled with infertility myself, I know how hard, painful, and confusing it can be waiting on God. Yet as the years passed and she grew older, even in her waiting, we are never once told that Elizabeth gave up on God or on her life serving Him. Instead she continued walking in obedience and trusting in whatever plans He had for her life.

And as He so loves to do, God rewarded Elizabeth’s faithfulness when at the age of around 60, she became pregnant with a son. Not just any son, but the promised messenger of God who would proclaim the soon to be born Messiah and prepare the way of the Lord! (Isaiah 40:3-5, Malachi 3:1) Because of her great faith and obedience God not only blessed Elizabeth with a child, through her, He fulfilled a promise made to Israel hundreds of years before her birth. Isn’t that just like God! He loves to bestow upon His children blessings far greater than we could ever imagine!

Obedience is a theme running throughout the story of Elizabeth. Her entire life she was faithful to the Lord, no matter what. When her baby was born, the tradition of the time was to name the first male child after his father. But obeying what an angel had told Zacharias, she named him John. (vs. 13, 59-60) And in great joy she cried out, “This is the way the Lord has dealt with me in the days when He looked with favor upon me, to take away my disgrace among men." (vs. 25), “Elizabeth was rejoicing in more than just the fact that she was having a baby. She was rejoicing over the fact that even though she had lived with the sorrow of barrenness for many years—even into her old age—it turned out that God had bigger plans for her than she or anyone else could have imagined. It turned out that she held a very privileged place in God's providential history.”....bethanybible.org

Are you in a season of unanswered prayer, stuck in God’s waiting room? Ask yourself these questions. Am I praying with persistence? When I pray is it with the intention of God’s will being done? Am I trusting in His perfect timing? While I wait am I still walking in faithful obedience? Will I accept His answer even if it’s no? And finally, will I remember to bless and praise the Lord when He does answer?

God has great and wonderful plans for everyone who, like Elizabeth, live in faithfulness and obedience. And all He asks is that we trust in His goodness, His love, and His perfect timing. His promise to each of us is this, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” So trust God and His perfect plan. For one day we too will be greatly rewarded for our faithful obedience. And we can join Elizabeth in joyfully saying, “Blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.” (vs. 45)

Lamentations 3:22,23 ~ Never Ceasing ~ God’s Faithfulness

12:00 AM

Saturday, March 9, 2019

Welcome to Scripture Saturday!

This coming week's memory verse is Lamentations 3:22,23...

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. (ESV)

What an amazing promise! God’s love never fails us and is endless.  Making a bad choice does not diminish or take away His mercy. It is there, just as sure as the sun rises in the morning.

He is faithful. Whatever He promises He will do. We can trust Him fully!  Even during the times in our lives that are most miserable, saddest, confusing…He is there! Just as Jeremiah utters these words, we can. He will ALWAYS come to the rescue and we can ALWAYS trust that it flows from His love for us!

Gods mercy and faithfulness surround you today. Notice! Be amazed! Worship and praise Him!  (based on iWorship devotion)

Have a blessed day and week everyone!

Out of the treasure of your Heart {Proverbs 16:6}

9:00 PM

Have you ever been in a situation where you lost contact with a person you really cared for, because of a misunderstanding? Because of words you or the other person shouldn’t have said? “If I had been wiser…” you say to yourself!

Today I focused in the following verses:
Prov. 16: 6 - “Unfailing love and faithfulness cover sin, evil is avoided by fear of the Lord” (NIV)
Proverbs 17:9-  “Whoever would foster love covers over an offence, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.”  (NIV)

To cover means:
To overspread the surface of (one thing) with another.
 To envelop; to clothe.
To shelter.
To remove from remembrance; to put away; to remit.
To extend over; to be sufficient for; to comprehend, include, or embrace; to solve.  (Websters Dictionary)

God is the fountain of Love who gave His only son for the remission of our sins (John 3:16). God is also the fountain of Wisdom:  “It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.”(1Cor. 1:30)  So by the mercy and truth of God in Christ Jesus, our sins are taken away, and the power of sin is broken, and we must forgive as He has forgiven us!

Solomon gives us the following advice:
-“He who pays attention to the word [of God] will find good,

And blessed (happy, prosperous, to be admired) is he who trusts [confidently] in the Lord.” (Prov. 16:20 AMP)

-“The heart of the wise instructs his mouth [in wisdom] and adds persuasiveness to his lips” (Proverbs 16:23 AMP)

In these verses we find that in our daily life in our community or in our family, it is very easy to offend those who surround us (especially our loved ones), not only with our actions but by the use of our words:

-Words filled with self-sufficiency; words with self-exhaltation; harsh words, senseless words…hurting words. Words that lack wisdom!

“For we all stumble and sin in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says [never saying the wrong thing], he is a perfect man [fully developed in character, without serious flaws], able to bridle his whole body and rein in his entire nature [taming his human faults and weaknesses].” (James 3:2 AMP)
But where do these words come from?  We should be careful about our thoughts: which seed (bitterness, lack of forgiveness, pride, etc.) are you allowing to take root in your heart (mind and soul)? We must remember that not all seeds bear good fruit (Gal. 5: 18-25)
Solomon exhorts us: “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.” (4:23)

Jesus also warned us: The [intrinsically] good man produces what is good and honorable and moral out of the good treasure [stored] in his heart; and the[intrinsically] evil man produces what is wicked and depraved out of the evil [in his heart]; for his mouth speaks from the overflow of his heart.” (Luke 6:45)
We can use words to say good things. But we can use words to say evil things, too. Our mouths can praise God, but they can curse other people. We must be careful about our words. (James 3:1-12).

We are God’s children and each of us can trust God and learn to be wise. We can all wear wisdom’s crown. Jesus said, ‘God will give honor to anyone who serves me.’ (John 12:26).
Are you about to give up in a family relationship, or with a friend?  What is keeping you from concealing with that person?
1 Peter 4:8Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”
Remember, a person is wise when he lives in a permanent communion with God and lives by His precepts.  Jesus Christ is the Word, and He has the last Word in our lives, so let us abide in Him! (Prov. 16:20)
Blessings!

Week Twenty-one

Welcome!  We pray that you have all had a precious time worshipping the Lord this morning!  Below you will find some thought provoking questions that will provide you a starting point to your journal writing to complete this week.  We hope that you will find this time soul satisfying!

Our reading this week was Psalm 79 - 112...

1. God’s eternal love is reason enough to rejoice and to sing with gladness. Maybe you’re not the best singer in town. In addition to using your vocal cords, how else can you “sing” of God’s eternal and tender mercies? Also list and pray for the people who will hear you when you “sing”.

I will sing of the tender mercies of the LORD forever! Young and old will hear of your faithfulness. Your unfailing love will last forever. Your faithfulness is as enduring as the heavens. (Psalm 89:1-2)

2. What is your ideal picture of a loving father? Whether or not your earthly father reflected the attributes of our heavenly Father, as every father should, God is still the perfect Dad in every way. As you pray, call God Abba, or Daddy, as a reminder of His tenderness and compassion for you.

The LORD is like a father to His children, tender and compassionate to those who fear Him. (Psalm 103:13)

3. Sometimes our efforts to praise God just don’t work. Describe a time when your heart was filled with genuine praise for Him. Is it any wonder that worship flows from a heart that is close to and confident in God?

My heart is confident in You, O God; no wonder I can sing your praises! (Psalm 108:1)

Assurance and Conviction

Welcome to Scripture Saturday!

Today we are memorizing Hebrews 11:1…

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Now the amplified version…

Now faith is the assurance (title deed, confirmation) of things hoped for (divinely guaranteed), and the evidence of things not seen [the conviction of their reality—faith comprehends as fact what cannot be experienced by the physical senses].

Faithfulness is holding fast to the promises of God…even if these promises are “things not seen.”  Think upon Abraham and Sarah. Faithfulness is manifested by this couple.  Abraham and Sarah teach us that faithfulness requires trust.  “The power of the example of Sarah and Abraham is that their lives joined these two dimensions. In the midst of change and uncertainty, they found God constant and faithful. Therefore, they too could be full of faith, holding fast to God's promises and moving forward into that future with God. May their faithfulness shine forth as an example for us that we too may prove faithful.”

“Faith makes real in our experience the promises that God has given about the future. Faith proves to us the fact that the things we presently cannot see—God, angels, demons, heaven, hell—are very much true and real. In other words, faith applies the reality of God’s promises and the unseen world to life in the present, visible world.”  (various sources)

Father, thank you for the promises you have given us, for our present and for our future. We will move forward placing our trust in You, for you know us best, You know what is best, and You are the Best!

Have a blessed and precious day everyone!

Leading With The Truth {Titus 1}

12:00 AM

Leading With The Truth {Titus 1}

Titus was a redeemed Gentile and beloved companion of Paul who referred to him as, “my true child in a common faith”, (v. 4) and “my partner and fellow worker.” (2 Cor. 8:23) He traveled with Paul to Corinth, Antioch, Jerusalem, and the island of Crete, where Titus remained to begin the task entrusted to him. The church at Crete was struggling, so Paul wanted Titus to appoint elders as overseers before eventually rejoining him in Nicopolis. Not an easy job since the church was being heavily influenced by the immorality of the Cretan culture. The men Titus chose were to be spiritual and above reproach. They would have to stand strong against the evil and ungodly influences which surrounded them, thereby leading others with the truth of God’s Word.

Paul begins by describing the character of those chosen. They were not to be, “self-willed, not quick tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain, but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self controlled” (vs.7-8) I’m sure that narrowed the list of potential men down quite a bit. For even the strongest of Christians, if not on guard, can find themselves falling prey to the temptation of worldly living. Much like today, the believers at Crete lived in a society which was trying to rid itself of God. The church was being corrupted by false doctrine and the depravity of the day. God called the believers in Crete to stand strong in the truth of His Word. A calling He also gives to us. He wants us to lead godly lives, allowing Christ to work in and and through us, drawing others to Him.

How do we do this? By “holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able to both exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.” To hold fast literally means to hold your position, or to hold tightly onto something. We are to hold on tightly to God and His Word. For His strength is unshakable and His Word is true. When we know what God says and hold it in our hearts, we won't be led astray by false teachers, wrong doctrines, and those “who turn away from the truth” (v. 14).

The truth of God’s Word is also a protection against “Christians” who, “profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him” (v. 16) As followers of Jesus we are to lead lives set apart from the world and which reflect His character. Being diligent to, “present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.” (2 Tim. 2:15) Sadly many who profess to love God instead lead lives of compromise, trying to balance one foot in the world and one foot in the Word. Busy trying to please both. But as Matthew 6:24 tells us, “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and hate the other.” When believers don’t practice what they preach, the credibility of their testimony is ruined. And those who live in complete disobedience to God become, “detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.” (v. 16) The world is watching. Is it clear to all who see you who it is you serve? Are your actions speaking louder than your words?

2 Thessalonians

Our Lord is faithful! {2 Thess. 3)

10:30 PM

Today we close an awesome week, with the final  words of encouragement of Paul to the Christians in Thessalonica. Paul insists that they  to continue to pray (1 Thes. 5:18) so that the Word would run freely, without any hindrance. Satan is number ONE in bringing this to pass, and some people may become discouraged when facing trials.  But a life of prayer would not only boost their faith, but prepare them to testify and work for His kingdom. These same words of encouragement are for us, too! God has promised that His word would be free and perform its work:

So will My word be which goes out of My mouth; It will not return to Me void (useless, without result), Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent (Isa. 55:11). But as with many of God's promises, we are expected to take this promise in faith, and in prayer ask God to perform it for His glory!

In verse 2 Paul warns: “ and [pray] that we will be rescued from perverse and evil men; for not everyone has the faith.“ (emphasis mine).  These were those who wanted to hinder the work of the gospel.  Have you ever been in the situation that some Christian people you know,  don’t’ live their  lives according to God’s precepts but this world’s standards? I have, and must sadly say: many times!!  We might not consider them “evil”, but the Word does!

Paul continues with this wonderful promise: But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you [setting you on a firm foundation] and will protect and guard you from the evil oneWe have confidence in the Lord concerning you, that you are doing and will continue to do the things [which] we command. May the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the steadfastness and patience of Christ” (AMP)

Yes, our Lord is faithful!  Even if not all men have faith, the Lord is faithful. This was the basis of Paul's confidence in God's ability to establish and guard us from the evil one.

God promised to keep Satan on a leash. He will not allow any temptation to become too great for us (1 Cor. 10:13) and will not allow Satan to do whatever he wants with us (Luke 22:31-32)

Paul warns the Thessalonians to withdraw from any  brother  or sister who walk in disobedience (vs. 6-12,14).  "The present tense of the verb walks denotes that it is a deliberate course of action. Their disorderly conduct is not an occasional lapse but a persistent practice." (Hiebert)

The purpose in withdrawing from the disobedient was not so much punishment, but more so simply to deny them the aid and comfort of the fellowship of the body of Christ until they repented. The purpose was to bring about repentance and salvation in the disobedient ones, and not to condemn them.

Paul continues with words of  encouragement: “13 And as for [the rest of] you, [c]believers, do not grow tired or lose heart in doing good [but continue doing what is right without weakening].” Or “be not weary in well doing”.  (Old KJV)

We find this same encouragement when Paul wrote to the Galatians:

And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” (6:9 KJV) Yes, although we may find obstacles and trials in our Christian life, we must remember our Father is Faithful and will not leave us nor forsake us and one day we will be with Him through eternity!

"But well doing consists in taking down the shutters and selling your goods; tucking up your shirt sleeves and doing a good day's work; sweeping the carpets and dusting the chairs, if you happen to be a domestic servant. Well doing is attending to the duties that arise out of our relationships in life - attending carefully to them, and seeing that in nothing we are eye-servers and men-pleasers, but in everything are seeking to serve God." (Spurgeon).

As with Paul’s final words to the Thessalonians, I would like to close today’s study with his Benediction: “16 Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.” “ 18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.” (AMP)  Amen!!

Blessings my sisters!!
