David

The Right Perspective {Psalm 9}

12:00 AM

Scripture reading: Psalm 9

Are you a, “half empty” or “half full” kind of girl when you look at things going on around you? I’ll admit I used to see things half empty, but I’ve changed and believe I’ve learned the secret to keep from growing discouraged in this life.

When David wrote this Psalm, he was dealing with the Philistines, probably his most powerful enemy at the time, yet he knew that God reigned supremely and had everything under control. Notice:
The Lord reigns forever;
he has established his throne for judgment.
He rules the world in righteousness
and judges the peoples with equity.
The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
Those who know your name trust in you,
for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.
(Psalm 9:7-10)

What, or who are the enemies you’re dealing with today? Is there a situation in your life that seems hopeless? Are you feeling down or discouraged about anything at the moment?  If so, then know you’re not alone.

The news media tells us that suicidal rates are up in this country among all ages. We’ve all heard of celebrities, who appear to be living the American dream ending their lives and we’re left wondering why.

I think all of us can think of a time or two when we’ve been discouraged, especially when going through hardships, loss, or illnesses. What’s important to remember, though, is that we shouldn’t let these feelings control us for very long.

Here in Psalm 9, David demonstrates for us what we all need to be doing during these times, and that’s gaining the “big picture” or whole picture. My guy taught me this concept years ago and since I’ve seen it on display over and over throughout God’s Word. You see its John’s job to run companies or large areas made up of many different divisions and there’s rarely a time that all divisions are running "trouble-free" all at once. His managers might start stressing out, and that’s when John would stop and allow them to see the larger picture by going through each different area to see how each were functioning at the moment and usually it was just one or two areas struggling and the rest were running fine.

That is often the case in our lives as well; we may be struggling with sinus issues due to allergy season, but we have our health, our marriage is going great, family is super, church, etc. It’s just this congestion that has us down and out! (I’m speaking from experience here)

Paul also knew the secret to not allowing his circumstances get him down, for the entire book of Philippians was written when Paul was in prison, yet he is focused on joy throughout! In fact, he encourages his readers to "rejoice always!" He essentially said the same to the church of Thessalonica in 1 Thes 5:16-18, “Rejoice always! Pray without ceasing! In all things give thanks, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus!”

Not all things are praiseworthy all the time, but I bet if we search hard enough we can find things to rejoice over in every situation! Mainly, as David testified of in Psalm 9:7, “Our Lord reigns forever…”. He’s got this!

If you are struggling through a challenging time right now I want to encourage you to go to Him and His word. He will not only sustain you during the crisis, but will also improve your perspective. And before taking another step give everything to the Lord, and then sit back and watch Him work things out on your behalf just as the great men did in the past.

A Song of Praise! {Psalm 96}

12:00 AM

Scripture Reading: Psalm 96

I used to be a kindergarten teacher. Most of those I share that bit of information with think I must have been crazy to actually want to spend hours lock in a room with anywhere from 15- 24 five year olds all at once, but I LOVE it!! And this Psalm sums up at least part of the reason I loved interacting with children that age and why God does too!
Notice:

“Oh sing to the Lord a new song;    sing to the Lord, all the earth! Sing to the Lord, bless His name;    tell of His salvation from day to day. Declare His glory among the nations,    His marvelous works among all the peoples! For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised!” (Psalm 66:1-4a)

Can you see an expressive five year old reciting these verses? I can! With all the exuberance they could possible muster!! It would be practically impossible for them to remain calm- cool – and collected!

And another wonderful thing about kindergartners is they don’t care how you sound; good or bad, they’re main focus is your enthusiasm! I hope our Father is like the children in my past classes when it comes to us making a joyful noise before Him!
I haven’t had any classical training in music, but I like to think that’s not what this Psalm is all about! We’re not sure who wrote this Psalm, but I can tell you he had a heart of a five year old who wanted everyone to know our God is a great God and so worthy of our praise!  All the time!

We know life can be scary…and stressful …and sorrowful! And any five year old will tell you life can be unfair! I’m sure the psalmist knew that as well, but I love how he continues to exhort us over and over again to praise God, and not because life is always easy, but  because he wants us to see the larger picture; the great - BIG - beautiful scene God is creating in our lives when we seek to follow Him.
We have tremendous reasons to throw off all our inhibitions and come before Him like a five year old and sing to Him a new song of PRAISE! My kindergartners will be the first to tell you that it doesn’t have to be perfect, just straight from the heart!

Welcome to Scripture Saturday!

This coming week's memory verse is Psalm 28:7...

The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving. (NLT)

“The most valuable thing the Psalms do for me is to express the same delight which made David dance.” (C.S. Lewis)

Dear Father…You are awesome and worthy of my praise and worship.  I trust you with all of my heart, my mind, and my soul. You are my strength, for I am weak. You are my shield, for I need protection. My heart bursts with joy and my mouth sings praises of thanksgiving of You!

I love you Lord!

So I’ll stand

With arms high and heart abandoned

In awe of the One who gave it all

So I’ll stand

My soul Lord to You, surrendered

All I am is Yours
So I’ll stand

With arms high and heart abandoned

In awe of the One who gave it all

So I’ll stand

My soul Lord to You, surrendered

All I am is Yours

The Stand (chorus only) by Hillsong

Have a blessed day and week everyone!

Scripture Saturday ~ Psalm 37:3-4~ Take delight! ~ Contentment

12:00 AM

Saturday, February 2, 2019

Welcome to Scripture Saturday!

This coming week's memory verse is Psalm 37:3-4...

Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart. (NIV)

Trust is an active form of believing. When we actively trust in God it governs the decisions we make and the work we do. Our trust makes us confident that He alone is able to provide us with the greatest quality of life. God alone has the power to satisfy us. He has promised to supply everything that we truly need. When we take delight in Him it draws us closer to God. We can begin to see our lives from His perspective. Remember that God has promised you both a future and a hope. He desires to be a part of our lives everyday.

Have a blessed day and week everyone!

Praise Him! {Psalms 145:1-150:6}

10:00 PM

Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever.

Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.

One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.- Psalm 145:2-4

As we come to an end to our study on Psalms, we can conclude that God alone is worthy to be praised!

Throughout Psalms we see over and over again David crying out for help.

We, as David can cry out to Him when we also feel sinking into the pit of depression and anxiety.

We can remember the good days and trust Him on the bad ones.

We can meditate on all of the Lord's doings on our behalf.

We can ponder in awe on all those mighty works of His hands.

We are free to spread our hands in prayer and supplication to Him.

We can call upon His name, lifting our souls to Him, trusting He will answer us.

We can do all these things because the Lord has promised to always respond to faith.

He is worthy of our praise. Whether is in the quietness of your heart, or as the psalmists also encourages us to praise God with instruments! dancing! and shouts of joy!. He is worthy of our exuberant praise!!

Prayer

God we are happy because our help and our hope are in YOU!- Psalm 146:5

Joy

A song in your heart!

12:00 AM

Friday May 4th-Psalms 13:1 -  16:11

A song in your heart!
Your heart can be filled with joy and your mouth
can shout out His praises, because He has been so good to us.

I will sing to the Lord because He has been so good to me. 13:6

In chapter 15 we see choices that we can make to worship Him.

Do what is right
Speak the truth from sincere hearts
Refuse to slander others or harm our neighbors or speak evil of our friends
Despise persistent sinners
Honor the faithful followers of the Lord
Keep our promises even when it hurts
Not charge interest on the money we lend
Refuse to accept bribes to testify against the innocent

A good check list when you do not have a song in your heart.

Those who choose to do these things will stand firm forever.

I believe that David chose to do these things.
They are choices that we have to make every day.

Psalm16 almost reads to me like a song in David's heart.
These are the things that David knew about his God.
* his safety and refuge was in God
* He knew who his Master was
* took pleasure in those who are Godly
* would not take part in those who went after other gods
* the Lord was his inheritance
* knew who guided him and instructed him
* that the Lord was always with him
*Will show him the way of life
* Granting him the joy of His presence
* the pleasures of living with Him forever.

Like David we make choices everyday to worship our Lord.
We have the same inheritance in the Lord that David did.
We have so much to be thankful for!

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up. Heb. 12: 1-3

Keep your eyes on Jesus!

No wonder my heart is filled with joy, and my mouth shouts His praises! 16:9
