Impacting the Future (1 Chronicles 22-27)

David wanted to build the Temple of the Lord but God made it known to David that he did not want David to do that. Instead, he wanted David’s son Solomon to have that duty. Now, I’m sure that David was disappointed with this decision but David accepted the will of God. In fact, David continued in his enthusiasm and support of a project he would never see in his lifetime. He wanted to do all that he could to help Solomon fulfill this grand task.
“For David said, “Solomon my son is young and inexperienced, and the house that is to be built for the Lord must be exceedingly magnificent, of fame and glory throughout all lands. I will therefore make preparation for it.” So David provided materials in great quantity before his death.” (1 Chronicles 22:5)
From David’s actions we can discern:
- David’s motive for wanting this temple built was to honor God and not for his own fame or recognition or even to exalt his son. He called together workers to help Solomon and he told them to remain focused on God as the sole purpose for the project. “Now set your mind and heart to seek the Lord your God. Arise and build the sanctuary of the Lord God, so that the ark of the covenant of the Lord and the holy vessels of God may be brought into a house built for the name of the Lord.” (1 Chronicles 22:19)
- David recognized that it was important to make contribution to the wellbeing of future generations. We are all entrusted with the opportunity to impact generations to follow. We impact our children and grandchildren. We can show them the love of God and teach them it is important to trust and obey Him. We can also impact other youth by involvement in our churches and communities. We each have a legacy that we can leave behind to honor God.
- David encouraged his son to be accountable to God and to be a man of action.
““Now, my son, the Lord be with you, so that you may succeed in building the house of the Lord your God, as he has spoken concerning you. Only, may the Lord grant you discretion and understanding, that when he gives you charge over Israel you may keep the law of the Lord your God. Then you will prosper if you are careful to observe the statutes and the rules that the Lord commanded Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Fear not; do not be dismayed.” (1 Chronicles 22:11-13 )
Do you encourage your children and others to put God first as the secret to true fulfillment and blessing in life? Do they see you put action behind your words as well?
Like David, we are blessed when we accept whatever role God desires for us to fulfill. He may give us grand scale projects and opportunities to accomplish or He may give us tasks on a smaller scale or with less grandeur. He may want us to support the efforts of others financially, with labor and/ or with prayer. Whatever God calls us to do, we find the most spiritual blessing and rest when we seek and accept His will for our lives.
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
