Faith

Rejecting Our Fears? {Joshua 1:1-9}

8:30 PM

Reading for Wednesday, January 23rd is Joshua 1:1-9,

After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide: “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses… No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.
Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:1-9 emphasis mine)

Can you imagine being assigned the duty of filling Moses’ shoes? I’d liken it to being asked to fill Billy Graham’s today I suppose. It seems like an impossible task!

Moses is gone and Joshua is now responsible for not only leading the Israelites into the Promised Land, BUT having to lead them into battle to destroy the Canaanites and take the land for themselves!

Joshua had been by Moses’ side for years, but he never quite had the relationship with God that Moses had. AND not only did Joshua need to take the people into the Promised Land and conquer it, he also needed to make sure the new settlements were divided fairly and according to God's plan, while constantly reminding the people that they were only there because of The Lord’s great love for them! This would be a huge task!

So God comes to Joshua and tells him:
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go...Only be strong and courageous. (Joshua 1:9, 18b)

It gets really interesting when we look a bit more closely at the meaning of each word above:

Commanded Tsavah has military overtones, as would befit a military commander. God gave Joshua not just an order but a commission to reject his fear. "Have I not commanded you?

StrongChazaq means to strengthen, but it's more than that. It means to be firm, prevail, withstand. The meaning of the word almost assumes success. "Have I not commanded you? Be strong..."

Courageous 'amats, is similar to chazaq, but  speaks of being alert and brave. Strength is good, but it needs a direction, which 'amats begins to give. "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous.

Frightened 'arats  means to tremble with fear, to be terrified. Joshua, who had watched God work through Moses, and had been one of two ready to take on the Canaanites forty years ago, (Numbers 13), was shaking in his sandals. His task seemed overwhelming, and he suddenly didn’t feel up to it. "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened,

DismayedChathath means to be so dismayed and afraid that you shatter into pieces. Joshua was that afraid!! "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed,"

Have you ever know such fear? To be so afraid that you’re body trembles?

I have! My heart has beat so hard I thought it was banging on my chest! I can remember even feeling sick and trembling, for things far less severe than all Joshua had to face at this moment.

Which is why I found it odd that God orders Joshua to reject his fear, to be firm, to prevail against his enemies, and be brave in the face of impossible odds. I completely understand his fear in facing what seems impossible, but how was Joshua to dismiss his fears completely?

The key for all of us when we’re facing insurmountable mountains is found in The Lord's next statement:

God didn't leave Joshua to do it on his own. He made a way through a promise: "...for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."

God promised to go with Joshua. That’s faith! Joshua would be stepping out in faith… in God and not himself. But there is another key element we all need to remember:

The LORD was going to be with Joshua because Joshua was going where God wanted him to go. God could promise Joshua that He would be with him because He knew Joshua would follow His leading and encourage the Israelites to do the same.

This means we too can reject our fears, stand firm, prevail against the enemy and bravely face what seem impossible odds. We too can step out in faith; knowing God goes with us when we’re following Him. And we can also encourage others to do the same!

1 Corinthians

Take That Step! {Acts 18-20}

7:05 PM

And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision, “Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent, for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many in this city who are my people.” Acts 18:9-10.

These verses always send me back to the beginning of my journey as a believer. Can you imagine the Apostle Paul being afraid? Neither could I when the Lord first showed me these verses. The City of Corinth was definitely not a city that would be receptive to the Gospel, but surely Paul wouldn’t be fearful there, would he? Certainly not Paul, but I’m getting ahead of myself…

You see, back when I first discovered these verses I was a fairly new believer; whose faith was smaller than a mustard seed. I looked at faith as more of a passive, internal conviction.  I trusted God in my heart and mind, but not so much through my actions. I desired to do great things for God as long as He didn’t take me out of my comfort zone! I loved attending Bible studies and reading His word on my own. I even grew brave enough to pray out loud with others! But I never, ever thought to teach other believers! That was until the Lord began to impress upon me that that was exactly His will for me!

Surely not! I couldn’t possibly be hearing Him correctly! After all, He knew how very shy I was! I was always content to simply be in the room to listen to others. No one needed to ever call on me and I certainly wouldn’t volunteer. He knew better than I how very little of God’s Word I had memorized, and was able to find in His Word! There were so many, many other Christians who had been walking with Him far longer than I had been at the time. Surely, I must have misunderstood Him. But He kept persisting in spite of all my efforts to remind Him of all the facts I’ve just stated.

Finally, one day He had me turn to 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 (AMP),

As for myself, brethren, when I came to you, I did not come proclaiming to you the testimony and evidence or mystery and secret of God in lofty words of eloquence or human philosophy and wisdom;
For I resolved to know nothing (to be acquainted with nothing, to make a display of the knowledge of nothing, and to be conscious of nothing) among you except Jesus Christ (the Messiah) and Him crucified.
And I was in (passed into a state of) weakness and fear (dread) and great trembling [after I had come] among you.
And my language and my message were not set forth in persuasive (enticing and plausible) words of wisdom, but they were in demonstration of the [Holy] Spirit and power [a proof by the Spirit and power of God, operating on me and stirring in the minds of my hearers the most holy emotions and thus persuading them],
So that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men (human philosophy), but in the power of God.

Can you believe this is Paul talking here? Neither could I at the time, but he’s recounting for the Corinthians this very moment in Acts 18. I could definitely relate to all Paul was feeling at that moment. Can you?

Has there ever been a time when God called you to step out of your comfort zone and take a new step of faith? Perhaps even now, for I can assure you, teaching women was not the last step of faith He’s called me to take over the past 30 years.

It seems, just as soon as I grow comfortable on the step I’m on, The Lord calls me to take another step! My faith over the years has been stretched in multiple ways, and as a result, my faith has grown and matured. To best sum up all I have learned through these times is; faith is tested and proved through our action.  James said as much in James 2:17, “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”.

So where in your life can you see God stretching your faith?  Have you recently taken a new step; venturing out into the unknown? Or is He calling you to take one? If so, I, as well as Paul, want to encourage you to take that step! I can promise you, you’ll not regret it.

I may have hesitated in the past, but I’ve never regretted any step I’ve taken, for the Lord is always there ready to bless incredibly!!

Speaking Truth, Speaking what is Written

4:50 AM

Note: I made a bit of a mistake, I had prepared this post but the scripture is from yesterday's reading. Keep in reading down, so you'll find a bit on today's reading.

Through Luke 4:1-12 we see Jesus being tempted by the enemy in all possible ways.

We sometimes think that Jesus’ temptations were not real because they were not exactly like ours. There was never a sinful pull or a sinful memory inside of Jesus, like in us. But in many ways, Jesus’ temptations were more real and more severe. For us, often times the pressure of temptation only relents when we give in – and Jesus never did. He had to withstand a much greater pressure of temptation than you or I ever will.

Nevertheless Jesus answered every temptation the devil used against him with God's Word.
In this passage we read how Jesus repeatedly said "it is written..." and quoted scriptures that directly addressed the enemy's lies and schemes.

What about us?
Quite recently I had a chat with one of my mentors. An elderly woman, who's passionate about God and His word. And as I confessed the struggles I had recently gone through and how I was a bit concerned, anxious and stressed to try again, to persist into the same situation I failed before, she encouraged me with this passage.

She encouraged me to speak back at the enemy with the truth...with God's word and the most important thing... to persist.

We may start strong fighting the devil with the Word, truth is that when we don't see quick results, often times we stop speaking the truth and fall into talking, believing or accepting what our feelings or our circumstances dictate us.

Let me encourage you today to be persistent  as you wage war against the enemy by speaking the word.
Let us take the example of a stonecutter. It may take ninety-nine times without making a crack in the rock but at the hundredth strike it may split the rock in two! Each little strike weakens the rock, even though there are no visible signs of it.

Persistence is vital if we want to achieve victory in our lives just as it is in the stonecutter's work.
Let us not slow down or give up on speaking the word of God against the enemy.

Today's reading- September 28thLuke 4:14- 5:39
Stepping out to find out!

I believe the only way to ever fulfill our destinies and succeed is to take many, many steps of faith.
But stepping out into the unknowns and longing out into the deep water can be frightening, don't you think so?

Unfortunately many people never step out out of fear, and therefore never get to find out what they are capable of.

God's desire for us is to take us from Glory to glory, from victory to victory, but that does not happen just automatically...without us having any input, without us taking active steps.

God wants us to step out into something new or challenging, what? to be glorified in our lives. To prove that without him we can't do anything (John 13:35)

Let us not join the people who miss God's will for their lives because they like to play it safe. The phrase "better safe than sorry" doesn't apply in God's economy.

Seeds of obedience produce a blessed and prosperous harvest. Nothing is better than knowing you are  operating in God's will at the same time, nothing is worse than knowing you are not.

Warning- while we should step out and respond in faith and obedience to what God is leading us to, we should not act onside wild thought we have or on a lie satan tries to lure us into destruction. It is always important to learn to be led by discernment in the inner man (the spirit) and not by our own carnal minds or what other people suggest to us.

Let us be willing to go into deep waters for God. Let us ask Him to make clear what He wants us to do and then obey!

Have a lovely, blessed weekend.

with love, from Botswana
