A Call To God Never Goes To Voicemail - Psalm 66

11:00 AM

I love how psalm 66 starts out with songs of praise to God for His glory, greatness, and works. Oh how easy it is to sing such wonderful songs when we feel surrounded by God’s glory. Those times we experience a spiritual, physical, and emotional closeness with Him. Usually it’s due to a received blessing, answered prayer, or a need fulfilled. We feel as if we’re walking on a cloud. Our hearts are filled with the joy, comfort, and warmth of fellowshipping with our Lord. And in our thankfulness we swear to never again forsake God, vowing to faithfully follow His will.

Then life goes on, and it’s business as usual. And slowly our focus wanders away from the Lord. Our time and energy is spent once again pursuing our fleshly desires. We let go of His hand, stray from His path, and go about attempting to meet our needs in our own strength. We put God in our back pocket, never pulling Him out again until the next crisis. But the joyful news is this. No matter how much we forget or reject God, He never does the same in kind. Never will our Heavenly Father withhold His precious love, time, or attention. Nor ever turn a deaf ear to our prayers.

Don’t you hate it when you’re trying to reach someone and your call goes straight to voicemail? That never happens with God. Through the privilege of prayer, we have a direct and open line of communication with the Lord. And no matter how long it’s been, He picks up on the first ring. Because God is always excited to hear from His children. For He’s been anxiously waiting, ready and eager to receive our call. Sadly, some Christians mistakenly believe that God only wants to hear from us about the big stuff. But the truth is, He cares and wants to hear about every area of our lives both big and small.

So much so that one of the many wonderful names of God is El Roi, the God who sees me. Our Lord never slumbers nor sleeps. His eyes are always watching over the righteous, His ears always listening for their prayers. Take a minute and really think about that. As Creator of the universe, God has His hands full. But even so, not a moment goes by where He takes His eye off of us. For He is the One who, “keeps us in life, and does not allow our feet to slip.” (Ps. 66:9)

Prayer is a gift God gives to us so that we can come to Him anytime, anywhere, with anything. Be it a petition, guidance, thankfulness, or to unburden our heart, God wants to be our first and daily destination. Out of His great love, when we talk to Him, God promises to both listen and respond. And although we may not like the answer, we can give thanks that no prayer will go unanswered!

Pause and Reflect -

How much time do you give God each day? Do you make Him a top priority? How does spending time in His presence daily make a difference in your life?

How can making a joyful noise to God bring happiness to God and to you, even when you do not feel joyful? Why do you think expressing joy is important to both us and God?

Finally let’s pray together,

Our dearest Father in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Heavenly Father we lift up our voices in praise to Your glorious name, for You alone are worthy, You alone are the Lord Almighty. You have saved us from the pit and have set our feet on the Rock of salvation. How awesome are Your deeds. We thank you Lord for remembering and never forsaking us. You are always faithful, even when we are not. Father thank You for the gift of being able to come to You in prayer. Please cleanse us from all wickedness harbored in our hearts. Free us from anything that hinders You hearing our pleas. For we know You bless obedience, not stubbornness. Father we give thanks for Your precious Son, Jesus and praise your awesome works. In Jesus precious name we pray, Amen.

1 John 1

True Fellowship {1 John 1}

9:30 AM

Today's Scripture Passage: 1 John 1

I've reached an age where all my grandparents have passed on from this life, and I realize there is so very much that I'd like to know about them, but it's too late. My grandparents all married late in their lives, so they were all in their sixties when I came along, and I was too young to realize the value of their wisdom they had to share with me back then.

I wish now that they had kept a journal, or written letters so I could have known more about their lives before I arrived, but all I have are a few photographs.

I get a sense that John is doing just this in this letter that has found it's way into our Bible. John is an old man now. He is the last living disciple among the original twelve that walked so closely with Jesus while on earth. I believe John, knowing that he may not be on earth much longer, wants to leave us with assurance that all we've heard about Jesus is true,

"What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes,
what we have observed and have touched with our hands, concerning the Word of life...

We have seen it and we testify and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father
and was revealed to us" (1:1-2)

But this wasn't John sole purpose for writing. Notice what he goes onto to say next,

"What we have seen and heard we also declare to you, so that you may have fellowship along with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete."( 1:3-4)

John's joy will be complete when he is assured that he has left us all we need to experience the same fellowship he shares with God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ. Pretty neat, huh?

So what do we need to know and do to experience that same fellowship?

"Now this is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light, and there is absolutely no darkness in Him. If we say, “We have fellowship with Him,” yet we walk in darkness, we are lying and are not practicing the truth." (1: 5-6)

John tells us plainly that in order to enjoy the same fellowship with God we must walk in the Light.  We need protection from the darkness! We need to move away from the darkness and move towards the Light. Do you see the turning taking place, which is called, repentance? Repentance simply put is an about face, yet more than simply an action, it's a matter of the heart. We need to get honest with God as the Light exposes more of the darkness.

We want to move away from the darkness and hidden sin to repentance and experience complete forgiveness because of all  Jesus, our Savior did for us! Sometimes I think we don't speak about this enough these days, and John wants to address that too when he tells us, "If we say, “We have fellowship with Him,” yet we walk in darkness, we are lying and are not practicing the truth." We need to get honest with God and with ourselves.

Repentance is what is required to be set free from the darkness and come to fellowship with the Light!  And who doesn't want to live freely in the Light of God’s love and care?

Who doesn't want to rejoice in His salvation? Living redeemed lives under His complete protection and guidance!
I also don't want you to miss this. John threw in an added bonus for us in verse 7
“If we walk in the light, God himself being the light, we also experience a SHARED life with one another, as the sacrificed blood of Jesus, God’s Son, purges ALL our sin.”  (emphasis mine)

Now I can see why John was so joyous to be able to share this with us!! Can't you?

Blessings,

sue

Fully Known & Loved {1John 1-3}

12:00 AM

This quote from Tim Keller grabbed my attention:

“To be loved but not known is comforting but superficial. To be known and not loved is our greatest fear. But to be fully known and truly loved is, well, a lot like being loved by God. It is what we need more than anything..."  Don't you think? I think this was why John felt compelled to write this letter of First John.
I believe God purposely created us to desire to be fully know and fully loved by both God and man because...
John explains right at the beginning of his letter that his purpose in writing is to tell us how to enjoy fellowship with one another and with God,

“We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.  We write this to make our joy complete. (1 John 1:3-4)

He wants us to know that the path to a joyous life is found in fellowship!

Fellowship actually means sharing in common, or sharing together. We were never meant to travel through this life alone, but think about this a moment... we, who were so defiled by sin, can have fellowship—can share together—with a holy God, not just in this life, but for eternity! That one thought should overwhelm us!

John Calvin explained it this way in Calvin’s Commentaries p. 162:

True is that saying, “Where your treasure is, there will be your heart also.” (Matt. 6:21) Whosoever, then, really perceives what fellowship with God is, will be satisfied with it alone, and will no more burn with desires for other things. “The Lord is my cup,” says David, “and my heritage; the lines have fallen for me on an excellent lot.” (Ps. 16:5, 6) In the same manner does Paul declare that all things were deemed by him as dung, in comparison with Christ alone. (Phil. 3:8) He, therefore, has at length made a proficiency in the Gospel, who esteems himself happy in having communion with God, and acquiesces in that alone; and thus he prefers it to the whole world, so that he is ready for its sake to relinquish all other things.

This fellowship with God and one another that John is writing about here is really just the fulfillment of the two Great Commandments; to love God with all your being, and to love one another (Matt. 22:37-40). The goal of the Bible is to help us glorify God as we experience the deep joy of a close relationship with Him and one another.

So, allow me to ask you, how is your fellowship with the Savior and others? And did you know that there is a difference between “sonship” and “fellowship”?

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.  If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. (1John 1:5-7)

Each child of God knows Him in two ways:
·         Sonship, when we were born into His family and He becomes our heavenly Father
·         But we also grow to know Him more deeply and intimately through fellowship.

When we were born into His family our standing as His child was settled forever and nothing can change that, but our fellowship with God from that moment is forever evolving. Theologians call this our state, or current condition before God. And it is truly up to us to seek to grow our fellowship with Him.

Trust me when I say, I believe some of His children have chosen to settle for less than God’s very best for themselves, and God will allow them that choice.

·         If all a body wants is to spend time in worship on Sunday mornings, that’s all they’ll get.
·         If others choose to fellowship a bit with other believers at times, that’s all they’ll get.

BUT if you refuse to settle like Paul, who counted all else refuse and dung in the hopes of knowing all there was to know about our Savior, God will make your joy complete, by coming to fellowship (share this life together) with you. And John is here to explain how that is possible, which begins by getting honest with God and others (walk in the light).

Our fellowship with God begins when we admit to God that we’re not satisfied with our relationship; that we, like Paul, David and others want more of God, and refuse to settle for less than the abundant life Jesus came to give each of us!

I want to encourage you ...don’t settle for an occasional, distant relationship. Make time to spend with Him each day in His Word and in conversation (a.k.a prayer). And both the Apostle John and I can assure you, you will be so very glad you did, for the One who know you fully and loves you best desires that too!

The Grace In Which We Stand {Romans 3:1-5:21}

12:00 AM

You cannot have grace without the cross. But because of the Cross, you have full access to His grace.”...Dr. Charles Stanley

The book of Romans is one of my favorites. To me it’s the most beautiful letter Paul wrote, and I often find myself turning to its chapters when I’m feeling particularly unlovable and unworthy of God; His love, and His blessings. I love what Martin Luther wrote about the book, “Romans is worthy not only that every Christian should know it word for word, by heart, but occupy himself with it every day, as the daily bread of the soul. It can never be read or pondered too much, and the more it is dealt with the more precious it becomes, and the better it tastes.“

In these first chapters Paul makes it known in no uncertain terms that there is nothing we can do to earn our salvation. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (vs. 3:23) Salvation comes only through the unmerited favor of God and the work of Jesus on the Cross. Because of our faith in Him we are, "justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus.” (vs. 3:24) Such a love our Father shows us in that when we who are guilty of breaking His law and owing a debt of death, instead of collecting our penalty He Himself laid down His own life in payment. That is God’s amazing grace. And it doesn’t stop there. For not only is God’s Grace the means by which we are saved, it also describes our standing before Him. But what does it mean to stand in God’s grace?

One of the ways the enemy keeps us downtrodden is by urging us to look at ourselves through fallen eyes. Fallen eyes see unworthiness, unforgiveness, guilt, and shame. Fallen eyes see the sin we commit daily and fill us with condemnation. Fallen eyes make us wonder how God could ever love such wicked sinners as ourselves. But because of our faith in Jesus when we stand before Him, God looks at us through perfect eyes filled with His grace. “Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.” (vs. 5:1-2)

The grace in which we stand counts us as forgiven, and righteous. We are deemed worthy and are placed in high favor before God. Once His enemy, we are now reconciled to Him and can walk in peace, fellowship, and love; never to be separated from God again. His grace calls us His beloved children and gives us joy knowing that we were created for His glory and will be with Him in that glory forever. Standing in God’s grace means us that no matter what the world or Satan tries to tell us, we are wanted, we are loved, and we are His!

When the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirt, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior.” (Titus 3:5-6)

Our Heavenly Father is, “the God of all grace” (1 Peter 5:10) He take us, who are forever and painfully undeserving, and offers us His gift of love and Salvation through no work of our own, instead giving His only Son as our payment in full. “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (vs. 5:8) Once were like tarnished pieces of silver, but when we receive Jesus as our Savior, God polishes away the grime and pollution of sin until we become shining reflections of His light. He sees us as finished, perfect, and clothed in righteousness. All of this is because we stand in His grace. And I for for one can think of no better place to be!

Exodus

How Can a Holy God Fellowship with Sinners? {Exodus 28-30}

12:00 AM

"That I Might Dwell Among Them" - Exodus 29:46

From the beginning of time it has always been The Lord’s desire to walk and fellowship with His people.
Only two chapters at the beginning of Genesis were written to describe the creation of the world, yet fourteen chapters in Exodus are taken up with the specifications of the tabernacle, for here is where God has come up with a way to meet with His people.
I believe this again demonstrates the value God has placed upon His  work of redemption, and that Christ is the center of that work when you take a look at the meaning behind the symbols. In an earlier post, I showed you how God’s message was found in the names of the original patriarch’s, from Adam to Noah, today I want to show you a few of the items included in the tabernacle and how they all point to Christ:
The entire tabernacle was a figure of the heavenly (Hebrews 9:23,24).
Inside the ark of the covenant:
·         Acacia wood and gold: the humanity and deity of Christ.
·         The Law [10 Commandments]: Christ had God's law in His heart;
·         He was the fulfillment of the law.
·         Manna: Christ is sustenance to believers on their pilgrimage.
·         Aaron's rod: Christ's resurrection.
The ark itself: A type of the throne of grace.
The mercy seat: the Lord Jesus.
The table of showbread: Christ our communion.
The candlestick: Christ our light (Heb 1:9; Rev 1:9-18).
The altar of incense: Christ our advocate and intercessor.
The laver: the cleansing by the Word and by Christ.
Bronze altar: the cross of Christ and His atonement.
Anointing oil: the Holy Spirit's anointing for service.
Garments [of the High Priest]:
·          gold for righteousness and Deity
·         blue for heavenly
·          purple for royalty
·          scarlet for sacrifice.

The writer of Hebrews said, ''And they, truly were many priests, because they were not allowed to continue by reason of death; but this man, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. Therefore, He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever lives to make intercession for them'' (Heb 7:23-25).

Jesus is able to understand our need because He is the perfect man, but He is also able to meet all our need because He is God. At the cross He bore the sin of the whole world. At the throne He is able to care for our need through His intercession.

Christ Jesus is ''a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek'' in that He is our Intercessor forever. But His priesthood is after the pattern of Aaron.  Aaron the first high priest was appointed by God (Ex 28:1).  Hebrews 5:5 says, ''So also Christ glorified not Himself to be made a high priest, but He that said unto Him, Thou art My Son, today have I begotten Thee.” Hebrews 9 reminds us that, ''Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood, He entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us'' (Heb 9:12).

The Lord said in Exodus 12:13, ''When I see the blood, I will pass over you''. Sin was judged, and the blood was shed, but all was only temporal, yet it also pointed to God’s eternal plan! Therefore, the way of salvation in both the Old and New Testaments is the same - Faith in Christ - For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast. (Eph 2:8-9)

Hallelujah! God was making a way for you long before you were ever born and there is nothing we could ever do to earn our salvation, for that would mean we would need to set aside God’s way! I pray as you read these chapters you will read them with a heart FULL of love for the Father and Son who were preparing a way to fellowship with YOU forever!
